Dear readers, this week edition will cover three news which have made a big impact in the world.
The first news I would like to bring your attention on is: Technology versus Terror (BBC Business live 17/01/2018)
With the spread of extremes content on Social media platforms, several companies (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) have decided to take measures in order to prevent terrorism. Indeed, Facebook decided to boost its team of moderator by 3000. Moreover, Google has employed 10 000 new moderators and Twitter has removed 1 million accounts related to terrorism. However, politicians think that this is not sufficient. Governments from all around the world are concerned. For example, in Germany firms could be fined (up to 61 million euros) if they don’t take down extremist materials while in the UK, firms can be given punitive taxes.
I can totally understand the development of these actions. The fact that both companies and governments are interested in this is a good thing. Indeed, social medias platforms are becoming quite unsafe places giving way to damaging excesses such as scams, terrorist and even pornographic networks. That is why they should take extra care when dealing with these kind of issues as it can also impact kids. In my opinion, governments should work with social medias companies so as to disrupt bad networks.
I also believe that these excesses are more developed in such platforms because they are not restrictive in term of free speech and conversation. So, everyone can express themselves (even if it is about a sensitive subject) until moderators ban them.
The second news that I will cover is: China new reform on plastic waste: (Business briefing 02/01/2017)
In 2018, Beijing decided to ban imports of a range of waste materials. To put this into context, most of the things that we recycle (plastics, paper waste, textile) is shift to China which is the bigger importer of global scrap in the world. However, 24 substances have been outlawed because the country is trying to reduce environmental damaged caused by waste. This will have repercussions over the world and recyclers will have to change the way they process their waste.
I personally believe that China’s new ban on plastics waste is a good thing for the environment. More and more attention is paid to plastic as it is very damaging for our environment. This ban can be the start of new plastic waste’s reforms in the world, leading to a cleaner habitat. This can also encourage firms to do more to protect the nature. However, this sudden reform may cause issues as countries don’t have necessary enough infrastructures to take care of more waste. Governments will have to review the way they recycle and if they don’t think of a new strategy at time, it may lead to a worrying situation.
The last news I would like to comment to is: Apple asked to curb children’s iPhone use: Asia Business report (09/01/2018)
One of the biggest companies of the world, Apple has seen its shareholders being worried about the addiction that their products could impact teenagers and children. Indeed, electronic devises may affect mental health. That is why one of their biggest shareholder, who is actually a teacher’s pension funds, is asking the company to consider these kinds of issues and to spread awareness to parents about the risk of addiction and mental health problems. In the letter sent to Apple, shareholders state that if the company starts to pay attention to health, it would make a « business sense ».
I think that children are more and more exposed to electronic devises and nowadays they are more likely to possess a smartphone at a younger age (10-13 years). I feel like children have a different approach of social interactions as we used to have. On one hand, the use of a smartphone is a problem as they can be exposed to adult things and they may deal with cyberattacks at a younger age. On another hand, it is also an issue regarding mental health. The use of a smartphone can make them feel lonely as they don’t hang out with friends anymore. It might in extreme cases lead them to depression. This is why parents should be aware of potential addictions and potential health issues.
It is a good thing that shareholders can have an impact on big companies especially if it is for a social cause.
