It seems like it’s the natural law of things that make your garage door crumble in the most hurried morning while you get an early appointment. Avoid emergencies with an inspection and maintenance routine. Troubleshooting your garage door begins with checking for these five common problems.

Before your garage door opener stops working, you may notice:

  1. The garage door opens and closes by itself. Although unusual, this usually indicates a short circuit somewhere in the system, whether on the circuit board itself or in the wall button, remote control or keypad. It is also probable that the remote has a fault that causes the transmission of random signals. For your safety, it is highly recommended to call a professional to solve electrical problems.
  2. The garage door does not open or close altogether. This usually indicates that the closing limit switch needs to be adjusted. You will find the limit switch on the rails or in the opener itself (see your user manual). The switches are actually buttons that can be turned clockwise with a flat-head screwdriver to increase the travel distance; turn the buttons counterclockwise to reduce the travel distance. Your user manual will give you detailed directions on how to fine-tune this setting and how to test the safety reversal system when you are done.
  3. The garage door is locked in one position. If you have a garage door opener, the first thing to do is to check the batteries, sensors and switches. For manual garage doors, make sure the wheel track is clear of obstructions. If it is still stuck, it may mean that your lane is bent or that you have a broken cable or pulley. In this case, a replacement track or cable may be required.
  4. The garage door opener beeps. Many garage door openers have an internal backup battery so they can operate during a power outage. If the garage door opener beeps, the opener is running on battery power and the external power supply has failed or the internal battery is not charging.
  5. The garage door makes loud noises. If you start to hear screeching or creaking noises while using your garage door, it usually means there is dirt or debris on the track, or it is not lubricated enough. If this is the case, use a lubricant specifically designed for garage doors or oil for equipment such as the WD-40. Apply grease to all door rails and hardware, and then operate the door a few times to see if the problem is resolved.
