Everyone, regardless of where one goes, maintains a relationship with someone. I have different types of relationships. I keep a relationship with my mother, father, sister, boss, grandfather, grandmother and my teachers. It’s important to maintain different relationships with people some will show us that they care and support us, others might not work out. Different relations help one to become the person who one is. Relationships have showed me how to trust, communicate, be honest, be responsible, and have respect.

My teachers have shown me that as a student, it's important to have communication with teachers because if one reaches out to them then they can help us out. Creating a positive relationship with teachers makes students feel more comfortable in being able to open up to them when they need help. This fall semester is my first semester as a college student. I have a low grade in my math class, I don’t understand my teacher. I asked her what is it that I could do to bring my grade up and she told me, “go to tutoring.” Tutoring has helped me understand the concepts of math that I didn’t understand. It’s important to have a teacher and student relationship because when you communicate with them they get you help. Teachers care for students, they want them to succeed.

My mother has shown me how to trust and be responsible. Having a daughter and mother relationship is important because it increases communication, trust, respect and to be honest with one another. In her text, “I Want a Wife,” Judy Brady mentions that she “wants a wife to keep track of the children’s doctor and dentist appointments” (502). Growing up, my mother has always been the one that was responsible for making sure that my sister and I had our yearly check-up appointment to the doctor and every 6 months to go to the dentist. My mother has shown me how to take responsibility and do responsible things an adult does, now I’m the one that’s responsible for making the appointments for my parents and sister. Whenever I was sick or something happened to me my mother was the one who would take care of me. Having an open relationship with our mother helps children to trust them with anything because they’re there to help us out, listen and make us responsible.

My father has shown me to have respect for others and myself, as well as to be a hard worker. A daughter and father relationship makes and shows a child how to trust them. My father has taught me how to communicate with different genders, also he has shown me how men are. My dad once told me about how men are and what they want. He has taught me to not fall for men’s sweet talk, dad has given me a lot of advice. My father has also taught me to become a harder worker, to always work towards what one wants and what better way than doing it on our own and not depend on others. My dad's encouragement to be responsible, independent and work has led me to work for the things I want, and a big step I did was buying my first car out of the dealership at the age of 18. Bonding with the opposite gender parent might be scary but helps one build trust and helps one communicate better because one can count on them.

Being an employee has shown me to be responsible and independent. Having a good relationship with one’s boss is important because having good communication they see the person one is, they will trust you. Since the beginning when I went to apply to become a youth instructor the only position they had available was as a substitute. I accepted the position of a substitute and every day for a week I was getting a call from my boss saying, “Hey, I was wondering if you were willing to sub today for this school from 2:25-6:00,” I would always tell him, “yes”. My boss saw that I was interested in the job and an opportunity came my way sooner than I expected. I received a phone call on April 17 of this year, my boss called me and said, “Hey, I have to talk to you, can you please stop by my office today at 1:30 if that works for you?” This call was scary just because I didn’t know what he had to talk to me about, I went to his office and he told me “I have a question for you, Do you want to work?” I answered, “Of course I want to work.” My boss then said, “You’re officially employed, I like the person you are, you have never turned down an opportunity that I have given to you and that speaks good about you, seems like you do want to work.” Ever since I’ve been employed I have become someone my boss can depend on, whenever there are extra hour opportunities I take them, whenever a leader doesn’t come to work I step up and do the work for the both of us. Being able to have good communication and building trust with one’s boss makes them see one as someone that they could count on.

I am a sister, and the role of a sister has taught me to become an honest person. Growing up since elementary school up to high school I was a victim of bullying. I never told anyone what was happening to me because I was afraid of others to judge me. In middle school, I wrote an essay in my English class where I didn’t think of what I wrote down, but I'm thankful I did because my teacher had to report it to the principal. My parents became aware of what was going on and they got me a counselor to help me out through the situation I was living. Being bullied and not telling anyone has made me have an open relationship with my sister, I always tell her that she is not alone and anything that happens to her I want her to be able to come to me and talk to me. My little sister came to me the other day and told me that she had a “C” in her AP math class. She was nervous to tell my mom, but I told her that it was okay that she had to be honest with my mom because she was going to find out either way. My sister then told my mom and my mom said, “it’s okay, I understand that you’re doing a higher math level and it’s difficult but I need you to try harder and bring up your grade.” Having a good relationship with my sister has taught me to be an honest person and tell her my experiences of life. Also, it has open trust between the two because we communicate better and she can count on me.

Lastly, I'm a granddaughter and my grandparents have taught me that life is about gaining respect and being able to communicate with my parents. For instance, my grandmother has always told us that first impressions are always important, when one has guests over and they enter one’s home it’s always important to greet them and offer them something to drink, doing so makes the guests feel welcomed. Another example, growing up I used to think that my parents didn’t like me because they would get me in trouble. My grandfather told me to talk to my parents and tell them how I felt. When I talked to my parents, they told me that they would get me in trouble because they didn’t want me to do the wrong things. My grandmother taught me how to gain people's respect. Even if people don’t treat you right one should show them otherwise and show them respect. My grandfather showed me that being able to communicate with someone when things are not okay or things are wrong, helps bring a solution to problems. Maintaining different relationships with different people create a self-identity where one can be trusted, responsible, respected, be honest, and communicate with others. It’s important to build relationships with different people because each person helps self-create one's identity of who one truly is. Having many relationships is important because each relationship shows us different things such as learning how to trust, listen to others, develop one's communication, etc. Different relationships tell us about their personal experiences and those experiences others and our self-live helps out to learn from each other’s' mistakes and therefore become a better person.
