Inside Out takes place in San Francisco and is set during modern times. The main characters are : Riley, a 12 year old girl that has to move to a new home in San Francisco; Joy, the “leader” of the emotions and controls happiness; Sadness, controls sadness but doesn’t know what her purpose is. The movie begins with the introduction of each emotion and how they control Riley emotionally. The emotions live in Riley’s head and work in the headquarters. There are memory cores which make Riley’s personality. Riley and her family have to move away from Minnesota and to San Francisco. At first, Riley doesn’t like the house but she gets cheered up when she pictures her room. She also plays paper hickey with her parents. They go out for lunch to eat pizza but ends up being vegetarian. The next day, the emotions want to keep Riley happy on her first day of school. Sadness touches a core memory and maker Riley cry in class. Joy tries to dispose of the sad memory but knocks off all of the other cores. The personality islands get powered off, Joy and Sadness get ducked up the memory tube with all of the other core memories. Anger, Fear and Disgust try to take over but only manages to make things worst. Riley gets upset with her father and slams the laptop when talking to her old friend. She begins to distance herself from everything slowly. Each personality island begins to fall, like friendship island and goofball island. Meanwhile, Sadness is too sad to walk so Joy has to drag her around as they try to find their way back to HQ. They try to get help from workers but Sadness says she knows the way back to HQ. They run into Riley’s old imaginary friend named Bing Bong, a pink cotton candy elephant. He tells them they can ride the train of thought back to HQ. They go through a shortcut but almost fades away from existence because it was actually an abstract thought tunnel. They make it to imaginary island where Bing Bong lives. They make it to the train station where it will lead back to HQ. Back at HQ, Anger inserts an idea for Riley to run away to Minnesota so she can make more memories. Riley goes to her mom’s purse to steal the credit card to ride the bus and run away. When she does this, it causes the train of thought to crash and derail. Joy sees a recall tube leading back to HQ and abandons sadness to get back. However, the tube breaks when another island falls. Joy and Bing Bong fall into the memory dump where all forgotten memories go. Joy looks through the fading memories and sees a memory of a hockey game Riley plays in. She realizes Sadness’s purpose was to let others know when Riley needs help emotionally. Joy calls for Bing Bong’s wagon rocket so they can escape. They keep trying but Bing Bong jumps off so Joy can make it back. Bing Bong fades away as he tells her to save Riley. Joy finds sadness but she runs away. She chases her through imaginary island, Joy uses Riley’s imaginary boyfriends to make a tower. She uses a balloon to propel sadness towards HQ. She gets on top of the boyfriend tower and grabs sadness. Meanwhile, Anger disables the console, making Riley emotionless. Joy and Sadness hit the window, Disgust uses Anger’s flame to burn a hole so they can get in. Sadness takes control of the console and makes Riley return home. She cries to her parents and confesses her true feelings, letting them know she misses home. This creates another core memory combined with joy and sadness. The personality islands begin to return as Riley adapts to her new life and she begins to play hockey again. A bigger console is installed at HQ so more complex emotions could be felt for Riley.
The voice actors of Inside Out were great and portrayed their characters perfectly. One performance that stood out to me was the voice of Bing Bing, Richard Kind. I thought Richard was the perfect for Bing Bong because he gave that “Goofball” feeling that helped connect with Riley’s character. Bing Bong was one of funniest characters in the movie which is why Richard played a huge role in providing the voice for him. Another voice actor that did a tremendous job was Amy Poehler as Joy. I thought Amy was a perfect fit because her tone was very upbeat which helped build her character. It also gave her character more personality which was important because Joy represents an emotion in Riley. Amy played a huge role as well since Joy is the “leader” of the emotions.
The number one thing I enjoyed in Inside Out was the animation. Knowing that this film was made by Pixar set the standards high for me and this movie hit the ball out of the park. Pixar did a great job in making this movie look beautiful like all of their other movies. The character design in itself was unique and artistic. For example, each of the emotion’s appearances represented their personality like how Anger was dressed as a Anger Management worker and how Disgust was green to represent nasty things. Animations like when they go through the abstract thought tunnel shortcut and they turn into 2-D really showed off their skills in animation.
One lesson I can learn after watching Inside Out is that sadness is an important emotion. Without sadness, you wouldn’t feel anything making you feel even worse inside. Sadness allows a person to get emotional help, making that person better in the end. It also allows a person to express how they really feel and just let it out. We see this in the movie when Sadness makes Riley go home and express her true feeling to her parents about moving to a new home.
I would recommend Inside Out to pretty much everyone, if you haven’t watched this movie, you should go out and watch it because it was great. The MPAA of this movie is PG which is not a big surprise considering that this movie is aimed towards children, however, there are some mature references and concepts like “Puberty”, and there was even a part when a curse word is censored. My final word of this film is that it was a Pixar hit with phenomenal voice acting, beautiful animation, and captivating plot about how our emotions work.
