I chose to look at how the U.S. Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration is handling the Syrian refugee crisis. .Since the national crisis in Syria many innocent men, women and children are affected by the ongoing conflict between the two main religious groups, Christianity and Islam (ISIS), and between different political factions. Based on multiple research documents and different reports, the conditions in which the people are forced to live is inhumane and brutal. These conditions have led to a huge migration of the Syrian population to the European Union and the United States. This worldwide conflict has caused major catastrophes for both the economic and social fabrics of the worldwide community. In the case of the U.S. interests abroad, ignoring the Syrian crisis and avoiding assistance would would cause a decline in the image of our country. The U.S. has always been a protector and defender of the weak and was always a leader in terms of aid to those countries and peoples in need, and the U.S. should continue to maintain this value of assistance To that end, our nation remains committed to helping other nations when they require our help. For example, the total amount of U.S. humanitarian assistance given since the start of the Syrian Conflict in March 2011 is now more than $5.1 billion. The United States remains the single-largest donor of humanitarian aid for those affected by Syrian crisis which has become the greatest humanitarian emergency of our era. Assisting these people poses no threat to the United States or its interests. In fact, assisting these people is consistent with the values inherent in the founding of our nation, and insures that the United States remains a beacon of safety and freedom for people all over the world.

The U.S. Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration has had a significant impact in mediating the Syrian crisis. Its mission is to provide aid and sustainable solutions for refugees, victims of conflict and stateless people around the world through repatriation, local integration, and resettlement in the United States. In particular with the Syrian crisis, the Bureau of Population has played a significant and important role to help resolve this issue. The goals of the organization support its mission in both action and awareness.. Their first goal is to make monetary donations to a reputable humanitarian organization working in the Syrian region. They save lives and reduce human suffering after crises by sharing information within the community, schools, faith-based organizations and neighborhoods. They also raise awareness by encouraging the community to support the Syrians facing crisis. To bring an end to the suffering and violence, the United States continues to work with the international community to reach a negotiated political solution to the conflict in Syria. Until there is a negotiated political settlement, the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration will continue to support international efforts to deliver aid and alleviate suffering.

If I were a member the Foreign Service assigned to the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, my mandate would be to provide protection and solutions to the world’s most vulnerable people: Refugees, conflict victims, stateless persons, and vulnerable migrants, and to do so by integrating diplomacy, advocacy and humanitarian assistance programs. Also, my main responsibilities are to keep Americans safe from threats. I would have to to build a more effective multilateral system for humanitarian response in cooperation with other bureaus and committees. One of my main responses would be the amount of money that my bureau would be able to provide for those people, and also to make sure that no one migrates to the U.S. without our government’s agreement and without breaking the laws of our system.

Since the Syrian migration issue is an international problem, an international committee is in charge of the resolution of the problem. The U.S., while taking a major role, is not allowed to take 100% unilateral action and responsibility in this issue. This bureau works in cooperation with other partners and organizations from around the world to address this issue. Such groups and organizations are the United Nations, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and International Rescue Committee. All those organizations work in committees in order to find solutions about the different issues that exist around the world. The Syrian immigration issue since its beginning, challenged a lot the international committee because this was a sensitive issue that had to be resolved in a delicate in order to protect as many people as they can. Some of the actions that they took were based on economic support. Also, they had to figure out a solution to protect the innocent people of Syria during the conflicts and battles. From my position in the bureau, my efforts would be directed to restoring the immigrants’ lives as well as supporting all the organizations protecting the Syrian families from harm. This solution could be accomplished either by moving these populations to a safe place, but since that would be really hard for the other countries, we would have to figure out a way for those people to stay in their country and protect them there. To achieve that goal, the bureau would have to work in cooperation with other bureaus, such as the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations and Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance.

The importance of the different organizations and government agencies in resolving the Syrian crisis is of great significance. In issues like the Syrian crisis, the support of different organizations is essential. The roles that all these agencies range from the economic assistance to the rehabilitation of the affected groups. In those special cases the charities and the organizations that take the most actions are: The American Refugee Committee, the CARE action, Catholic Relief Services, Global Hope Network International, Globalgiving, International Rescue Committee, Islamic Relief USA, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, Save the Children, Shelterbox USA and many more. All those organizations provide plans of humanitarian aid for food, clothing, shelter, medical assistance and schooling for children. This group of diverse donors has differing mandates, values, goals, strategies and activities, but most function under one universal humanitarian principle: To protect the vulnerable by decreasing morbidity and mortality, alleviate suffering and enhance well-being, human dignity, and quality of life.
