Throughout the history of art, some rulers marked their step toward accomplishing a task even though they might not have succeeded. I have learned that a victory for a leader doesn’t mean winning a battle or seizing a territory it’s what that leader did to leave a legacy behind. One artwork that stood out to me is the fragment of the “victory stele” that is from Girsu, Iraq dated 2600- 2500 BCE. This artwork is dedicated to the god Ningirsu for a victory of taking over the city of Umma. It’s a very large fragment showing troops being led to the battle. The second artwork is the Standard of Ur from Iraq dated from 2600-2400 BCE made from red limestone. It is a tomb that shows the victory from a battle and it is carefully drawn figures to depict their role in the community.
There is still a debate on whether these people actually existed, or it was made for the middle-class like aristocrats. This artwork is simply stunning because it uses a technique called mosaic to create figures which is very colorful, and the size of each person depicts their role in the community. The Votive disk of Enheduanna from Iraq dated from 2300- 2275 BCE is an artwork dedicating god of the moon. It is a gold color and shaped like a moon to honor a woman and keeping her legacy. Going back to the video objects found in the cemetery in “Royal Tombs of Ur” the artwork had gold, silver, and different colors like red and white to differentiate people from other societies. As we talk about the different societies I found that the Persian empire was much different in terms of war.
In the documentary “Lost Worlds Persepolis” the king like peace and no battles. The Persians freed the Jewish people and allowed them to practice their religion which I found unusual. The Persians did this to liberate the Jewish people, but not to conquer their territory and make them like themselves. It is interesting to see that propaganda could have been used to portray this “victory”. Thinking about a different aspect it could be to build an empire of a multilingual empire that would pass on to the next king which sounded off to me. The Persians did not leave lots of evidence of what everyday life based on the ancient artifacts but being nice to others is something I doubt.
