Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano, which is a volcano with a caldera that has already been filled with a new central cone, and with gentle slopes towards its bottom, but a sharp peak towards the top. Its explosions are explosive and have pyroclastic flows (currents of It is one of the few volcanoes that makes up the Campanian volcanic arc (it’s, as you’ve probably already guessed, an arc of volcanoes in the Campania region of Italy, that consists of dormant, active, and extinct volcanoes) and is the only active volcano on the Europe mainland.

Despite the fact that it hasn’t erupted since 1944, which was 74 years ago, an eruption that claimed the lives of 26 people, destroyed nearby villages, and coated the US airplanes at the Pompeii airfield in thick coats of ash, it is still considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and is monitored around the clock by experts looking for the slightest sign of eruption. Mount Vesuvius is located on the western coast of Italy, Placing it just 12 kilometers away from the city of Naples, which has a population of over one million six hundred, is well inside the red zone of Mount Vesuvius, which would be the first area to be hit by pyroclastic flows.

If Mount Vesuvius erupted, around two million people would be in danger. The Italian government continues to try to lessen the amount of people and homes close to Mt. Vesuvius by breaking down illegally built structures, offering financial incentives for families to move farther away, and constructing national parks to slow further construction, the tourist attraction of Pompeii and other roman towns similar to it are a very large obstacle in their way, because even though the tourism is in the way of the disaster response plan brought up by the Italian government, it is a vital part of the surrounding cities’ (Naples & Co.) economy.
