What is polycystic ovarian syndrome? Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS is a health problem caused by abnormal hormone imbalance. If PCOS is left untreated it can lead to more health problems like diabetes, heart disease and can cause the body to become insulin resistant.
Although there can be many symptoms and diagnosis of PCOS the following are the most common. With PCOS you can have acne, extra facial and body hair, thinning of your hair, irregular periods, infertility, depression, darkening of the skin, weight gain and trouble losing weight. Although there can be many more symptoms of PCOS it is important to know the most common ones. Being educated on the common symptoms can help someone having the same symptoms see their doctor and get tested for PCOS. Having said that, there are many ways you can get diagnosed with PCOS. The following are the four basic ways doctors diagnose patients with PCOS. A physical exam can be performed by your doctor. The doctor will measure your blood pressure, BMI, and waist size. Look for obvious signs like extra facial hair, acne, and skin discoloration. The next test could be a pelvic exam. In the pelvic exam the doctor is looking for signs of extra male hormones and to check if your ovaries are enlarged or swollen. The third test is a pelvic ultrasound. In this test they use the soundwaves to examine the ovaries for cysts and check the endometrium. The fourth test your doctor can perform is a blood test. This blood test will mainly check the androgen hormone levels.
There can be many ways to treat PCOS but the most common usually involve life style changes and typical medication. Changing your eating habits and exercising more can help you lose weight decreasing the chances of diabetes and heart disease. Common medications prescribed is birth control, anti-androgen medicines, and metformin. Anti-androgen medicines bock the effect of androgens and can help reduce hair loss, facial and body hair growth and acne. Metformin is often used to treat diabetes but can help women with PCOS. Metformin can lower both insulin and androgen levels.
