In the deserts of Egypt lie the huge remains of a very old city/people. These huge works of human effort are the only member of the Seven Very old Wonders of the World that time has passed down to us. These are, of course, the great pyramids of very old Egypt. But these very big structures were not built to impress city-related/people-related millennia down the road. The pyramids in fact had a purpose to the very old Egyptians. I always had the question of what tools were used to create the pyramid. For instance, much is made about how the Egyptians could cut so much stone with only stone and soft metal tools. The fact is, there are some reasonable methods they could have done this.

Experimental (the study of ancient people) has proven that it’s possible to cut large stone blocks in a short amount of time by finding a good piece of stone, finding a natural fault line or weak spot in the stone, lighting a fire on top of the weak spot for (more than two, but not a lot of) hours and then pouring cold water over the top of it. This weakens the rock and a few people, with hard stone tools like (very hard rock), can cut it in a couple of hours. Now, there is no Egyptian document or written saying that this is the method the Egyptians used. They may have used it, they may have used an almost the same method or they may have used another method all together. The experts don’t know for sure.

A pyramid was an ideal monument construction for the very old Egyptians and native Americans because it could reach maximum height and volume with minimum engineering skills. It was basically a manmade hill. As people developed more advanced engineering skills, they moved on to more advanced constructions, pushing the edges/borders of their skills, tools, and materials. The Romans received much more utility from the far more advanced Flavian Outdoor theater than they would have a solid stone hill. In a nutshell, a pyramid is the easiest way to make something big without engineering abilities. You just have to pile up things and give them a general shape. The base is a square because polygons were the first geometric shapes people mastered circles are a bit harder to build and four sides provide (good) enough (firm and steady nature/lasting nature/strength) better than a triangle without becoming too complicated less than pentagon. The walls are inclined because the very old peoples didn’t have engineering amazing abilities to build straight-up walls. Inclined walls just support each other.

Basically, a pyramid is a building that has no supports, but rather depends on the shallow tension of the material they were built of. Since stones can take more pressure, Egyptian pyramids could become much bigger than Mesopotamian pyramids, which were made of dried mud. The reason why pyramids appeared in different cities/people is simply that the problem of “making something big to impress the people” can only result in a pyramidal shape if you use the technology those peoples had. In Egypt there are many examples of “failed pyramids” or pyramids left alone during different stages of constructions, or pyramids belonging to previous stepped models. I really enjoyed this research topic I still have thoughts why they was made but the information I studied was enough.
