There are 19 Democratic candidates and 4 Republican candidates for the 2020 Presidential Election. Bernie Sanders is my choice as one of the frontrunners for the Democratic nomination. Born September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY, making Sanders one of the oldest politicians to run for President at the age of 78. The other two who are higher in the polls are Joe Biden Jr, 76 and Elizabeth Warren, 70. President Trump is 73. Showing age will not be an issue in this election.

Bernie graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelors’ in Political Sciences. In 1981 Bernie ran as an Independent and won the election for mayor of Burlington Vermont and held office for four terms, from 1981 to 1989. After that, he was elected to the US House of Representatives from 1990 to 2006. He then was elected to the US Senate 2007 - present for the state of Vermont. Bernie ran for the Democratic Presidential candidate in 2016, and lost to Hillary Clinton but still managed to receive around 43% of the popular vote in the primaries. Compared to Clinton's 55%, and he received support from 39%of delegates at the national convention to Clinton's 60 percent. Bernie declared his Democratic candidacy for president on February 19, 2019. He is a registered in the independent party but is a self-proclaim Democratic socialist and progressive. Even after his heart surgery on October 2, 2019, and discharge on the 6th, he is still one of the top three frontrunners on the Democratic ticket. Unlike any of his opponents, “Sanders campaign does not pursue funding from Super PAC or wealthy donors; instead, he focuses on small individual donations.” Using the internet, social media, podcasts, and live-stream forums to get his message out to the people.

There are many issues Bernie wants to fix in the US government and the American system overall to be a healthier country. I have selected just a few that I feel strongly about. The first issue he wants to fix is the health care system. He wants to create free Medicare for All, a single-payer healthcare plan. He views health care as a “right for the people and not a privilege for the ones who can afford it.” This system would also cover vision and dental. He also wants to cut prescription medication prices in half and start investing in the development of new and possibly better drugs for the ill. He feels that more money should be going to medical professionals since they help others get better from their illnesses. Climate change is another issue he has been trying to reform. With the polar ice caps melting, the rainforests are dying, and extreme weather changes across the world, this is a global crisis. We need to change the way we live, moving from using fossil fuels to energy-efficient methods or renewable resources. 'The Green New Deal, a ten-year, nationwide reorganization during which climate change will be factored into virtually every area of policy, from immigration to trade to foreign policy and beyond.' He wants to reach 100 % renewable energy by 2030 and complete decarbonization of the economy by 2050 at the latest. He wants to directly invest $16.3 trillion to public investment, in turn, creating 20 million jobs along with trying to reduce emissions throughout the world.

Affordable housing crisis on going in America today, a minimum-wage worker can’t afford a clean, livable home. He plans to invest $1.48 trillion over ten years in the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund. The money would be used to build, rehabilitate, and preserve the 7.4 million quality, affordable, and accessible housing units necessary to eliminate the affordable housing gap. These will remain affordable in perpetuity, and units constructed with this funding will be eligible to be located in mixed-income developments. Then invest an additional $400 billion to build 2 million mixed-income social housing units. To be administered through the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund, which will help desegregate and integrate communities. This plan will guarantee equity in social housing units, ensuring no inequality of services or conditions within units. Also on top of everything he wants to increase funding for the Indian Housing Block Grant Program to $3 billion to build, preserve, and rehabilitate affordable housing in Indian country.

College for all is also on his to-do list. It's the idea of possible free tuition to state schools and making college debt-free for all, along with canceling all existing student debt.” The College For All act to provide at least $48 billion per year to eliminate tuition and fees at four-year public colleges and universities.” Cancel all existing student debt. Forty-five million people have 1.6 trillion in student debt. I know personally, I would have a higher loan debt if it wasn’t for the NYS Excelsior program. Being raised by a single parent, my mom doesn’t get any child support, so this program defiantly helps. I also see a lot of my friends working part-time and just making ends meet to pay tuition along with room and food. Everyone deserves the right to higher education if they choose to pursue it, no matter their income. He also wants to invest in historically black colleges and minority-serving institutions, ending equity gaps in higher education attainment. “To do this, Bernie says we will impose a tax of a fraction of a percent on Wall Street speculators who nearly destroyed the economy a decade ago. This Wall Street speculation tax will raise $2.4 trillion over the next ten years. It works by placing a 0.5 percent tax on stock trades – 50 cents on every $100 of stock – a 0.1 percent fee on bond trades, and a 0.005 percent fee on derivatives trades.”

Bernie has 18 other candidates running against him in the 2020 election for the Democratic Party nomination. One candidate that shows many similarities with him is Elizabeth Warren. They both want to create free college and rid Americans of student debt loans. Both of them want to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and are strong supporters of unions and the labor movement. They both have progressive wealth taxes to pay for a bigger social safety net. They even both have similar agendas targeting Wall Street. Bernie has an idea that would put a cap on the size of the financial institutions that would break up six of the biggest firms in the country. They do have specific differences as-well. Warren’s vision is deeply rooted in her policies, solving the ills of society. Bernie is calling for a social movement to upend the American political order as we know it. Also, Sanders is a democratic socialist. While she, on the other hand, is a capitalist who believes in markets, as long as they are strongly regulated. Bernie stated “In my view, there will never be any real change in this country unless there is a political revolution, and that means that millions of people have got to stand up and take on the corporate interests, the billionaire class, the one percent and tell them that in this country our economy and our government belong to all of us and not just wealthy campaign contributors.” Even though he is apart of that one percent of billionaires. I see Bernie as representing a new emerging trend because he’s not just fighting for certain things to benefit one particular group. He’s trying to fix the broken health care system and save young adults from a lifetime of debt. His ideas and platform would better the country for generations to come, not just for his four years in office. Along with having more views directed at and aligned with America's young adults.

I find Bernie Sanders interesting because his platform basis is on saving and helping my future. I would love free health care and college tuition. This plan would save me so much money after I get out of college, which would give me a better start on living on my own, allowing me to contribute to society. A problem with his platform is how he’s going to tackle the issues he wants to fix. He’s not specific on where the money is coming from to pay for free healthcare or tuition, how he’s going to attain his goals while he’s in office. Raising taxes would lead to problems since there are already high as it is in some states like NY or California. He would see considerable opposition from the wealthy, large corporations, and Wall Street. Unfortunately, as we have seen in the 2016 election, I don’t feel he will be able to beat out President Trump. His ideas and views align with how I would like America to be, but there is a more significant population than us young adults. This voting group only sees $$ as the bottom line and not how a few changes would better the lives of the less fortunate. And doing so could help them be more productive and contribute more to society.
