Valar Morghulis or if you would like me to translate to your peasant tongue “All men must die”. If you don’t know who to respond to that just yet I suggest you archive this article for later reading and watch at least the season one of Game of Thrones. If you have not watch this series then you are part of the snobbish 10% of the population. You can stream it via signing up to HBO Go or even by using connected-TV device like Fire Stick. Game of Thrones or GoT is an HBO adaptation from George R. R. Martin’s book “Song of Ice and Fire. ” Its latest season, season 7, garnered around 10. 1 million viewers on its live broadcast. If you compare that to a mere 2. 2 million from its pilot episode you would get that it’s following has significantly grown. In 2015, the series is so in demand that it became the most pirated TV show according to TorrentFreak.
It has an average budget of around USD $6 million per episode and reaps more than USD $1 billion annually. With big budget and high raked of money, Game of Thrones can already be considered a successful show. It has received praises from critics and recognition from award-giving bodies. I, personally am a fan of this TV series. I get hyped by the mere opening music of the show. Let me discuss a few reasons why Game of Thrones is the best TV show in recent history. The ActingThe actors and actress of Game of Thrones may not be your typical Hollywood A-listers but you don’t need big names when you have the talent. The actors in GOT can deliver and deliver they did. They give life and personality to each character they portrayed and transcend those over from the silver screen to our home and etched them to our hearts. I can bow down and kiss the foot of Lena Headey for giving life to Cersei Lannister. I have never liked and hate a character before in my life. The CharactersI envy the mind of George R. R. Martin, on how he can come up with an epic book filled with complex characters. I see no archetypal characters in Game of Thrones. No character is left behind and went to waste. Everyone has a purpose, significance and role for the story to continue.
A good example is Hodor, he is a simple stable boy living under the Starks. You know something is wrong with him because all he can utter is his name “Hodor”. But around the midseason there was a reveal behind his story and for a minute character like him in the big grand scheme of Westeros, he made me sob like a lot. And for quite some time, I cry whenever I see a door. Ugh! I can still feel the pain in my heart. Then I remember in the first season, when Ned Stark was beheaded. I thought to myself, now what, the main protagonist is dead. But boy I was wrong. Everyone is a protagonist in this series. You may love them today, hate them tomorrow but one thing is for sure you will follow their story. Because for some reason a part of them resonates with you. Everyone is human, everyone. The ScriptI’m the type of person that can absorb anything I watch on TV and movies. I keep using the same movie script that pique my interest. Game of Thrones is filled with remarkable lines from their script. Many are well familiar with “Winter is coming” or “The north remembers. ” Cersei Lannister has a ton of lines that is menacing but because it was delivered perfectly you won’t mind receiving it like “Enemies to the east, enemies to the west, enemies to the south, and enemies to the north. Whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it. ” I feel like joining the bad guys now. And I personally like Daenerys line wherein she said “I will take what is mine with blood and fire. ” Doesn’t that sound cool? Imagine saying that to your real life enemy. Ok, my fandom is starting to kick in. The Plot The story is filled with twist and turns, ups and downs.
Watching the series made me more pessimistic than any show or real-life experience combine. The show is full of scenarios that is glorifying, hopeful, hopeless, romantic, disgusting, pornographic, sweet, violent, wonderful, heroic, stupid, demonic, sorrowful, and ambitious. Whatever plot twist they make at the end of the day as a viewer you will just find it rewarding. Fan baseI’m obviously part of this. The fan base of Game of Thrones is tremendous. It has been covered by many cartoon sketches, sitcoms and memes. You will know a show is popular and successful when it has become part of pop culture and integrated different aspect of media.
