Textbooks drive the college education one classroom at a time. However, no one takes a chance to look and see where that textbook was published from. Oftentimes, our textbooks are published from Texas and we never even thought twice about that. Although, with the latest news circling the internet, people may pay more attention about where their textbooks come from. Texas is considering ruling out education about evolution in the textbooks they produce, which could substantially affect what students in Missouri, and any other state, are learning from their textbooks.
Evolution was a huge controversy in the past, and apparently nothing got solved because religion is back again. Texas members of the state board of education are trying to take evolution out of our science books. They believe that it could be explained by the words of the bible and that creation is the only answer. Having just watched Inherit the Wind, we already know that teachers have gotten punished for this in the past. However, the question remains, why try to take it out of our education now? People have the right to think and come up with their own thoughts as to what may have happened. Thought process is one of the many things that makes humans differ from animals, so why are we being told that we can’t use it? Evolution is an explanation of how man was created from monkey that is backed up by scientists and artifacts. Whereas creation is something that is backed up by religion and a book.
Additionally, we have coincided for many years with creation and evolution and it didn’t do anyone harm. Students who live in states where their textbooks did not come from Texas are going to be taught about evolution. However, students who are forced to use the textbooks that were bought by their school, that lack the information about evolution, will never know anything about it. When they go off to a higher education and they are talking about a topic involving evolution, they will have no idea what it is to be able to engage in the conversation. Students deserve the right to an education that allows them information taught by educated people. They are trying to get an education and the people of the state board of education will be depriving them of learning about science and about something that happened in history.
Briefly, students from many different states will be affected by this new change in our textbooks. Science backing up an event that religion opposes doesn’t mean that it did not occur. Religion is a choice of many people throughout the world, but it should not be able to affect someone’s education as strongly as the Texas State School Board of Education is trying to make it. Students should be able to learn about every aspect of the world and not make it biased to a certain group of people.
