Are you sure you you want to delete all the citations in this list?
The APSA (American Political Science Association) uses an adjusted citation system based on the Chicago Manual of Style. Its primary focus is on formats revolving around political science while paying special attention to documents created by the US government.Â
The Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition is the foundation for the APSA Style Manual for Political Science. It was last revised in August 2018 by APSA. This association was created in 1903 in New Orleans Tulane University and currently publishes four different academic journals.Â
APSA headquarters are currently located in New Hampshire.
The APSA citation style is used to show where other authors have contributed to a study or a research paper. Besides books, APSA references also include citing websites, journals, movies, videos, images and even blogs.
The first thing to remember is to add as much information as possible about the resource. Here is a typical format you should use when citing a book with APSA citation. Make sure to include this part in the reference list or bibliography at the end of the document:Â
Format: Last name, first name. Publishing year. Book title. City: Publisher name.
When there are multiple citations, the first author cited should be listed first in the bibliography. When the books are anonymous, the titles of the books should be listed alphabetically. All the parts should be divided with a period and begin with a capital letter.Â
Single author: Miyamoto, Yoshio. 1942. Hoso to kokka. Broadcasting and the national defense state. Tokyo: Nihon Hoso Shuppan Kyokai.
Multiple authors: Doe, John, Thomas Smith, and Richard Jones. 2001. Writing Techniques. New York: Doe Publishers.
This political science citation style has a so-called “parenthetical system”, which means that the citations are added within text along with a complete reference that is added at the end of the paper in alphabetical order.Â
With a parenthetical system, the readers can see where the contributions from other sources have been made to the paper, and it points towards the whole reference that they can use to find the original source.Â
When citing in-text, the text should include the author’s last name and the year they published their book. For example:Â
Single author: (Thistlewaite 1960).
Multiple authors: (Nall, King, and Imai 2009).
It’s also possible to cite authors with their names followed by a direct quote, year, and by adding the chapter of the quote.Â
Format: Author name, quote, year, and chapter divided by a period.
Example: According to Doe, “short sentences improve readability” (2001. 2).
Students and professionals who want to publish political science work must use the right reference citation. If not, your work can be flagged as plagiarism and stolen intellectual property. However, this can sometimes be tricky, even if you make an effort to do so.Â
