The CSE (Council of Science Editors) citation style refers to a set of rules for citing sources in scientific papers. It helps authors, editors, publishers, and students format reference lists and in-text citations in papers related to physical and life sciences.
To ensure your work doesn’t constitute plagiarism, follow the CSE website citation rules below.
The CSE citation style specifies several guidelines for citing websites and webpages in reference lists. Here are the formats and examples:
Structure: Website Title [Internet]. Publication Year. Publication City (State/Country Initials): Publisher; [updated date if available; accessed date]. URL
Example:
Structure: Page title in sentence case [Internet]. Publication Year. Publication City (State/Country Initials): Publisher; [updated date if available; accessed date]. URL
Example:
Structure: Last Name First/Middle Initial(s) without space or punctuation. Publication Year. Webpage title in sentence case. Publication City (State/Country Initials): Publisher; [updated date if available; accessed date]. URL
Example:
Structure: [Author abbreviation]. Author. Publication Year. Webpage title in sentence case. Publication City (State/Country Initials): Publisher; [updated date if available; accessed date]. URL
Example:
If there’s no publication date, write “date unknown” in square brackets in place of the publication year.
When writing in-text website or webpage citations, follow these two formats:
Structure: (Corporate Author or Personal Author’s Last Name Publication Year)
Examples:
(Cleveland Clinic 2015)
(National Institutes of Health 2016) or (NIH 2016)
(Keller 2022)
(Williams [date unknown])
When writing an in-text reference of a webpage with no author, include only the title’s first word or two (if there are more) and use an ellipsis.
Example:
(Rapid acceleration … 2019)
Structure: Corporate Author or Personal Author’s Last Name (Publication Year)
Examples:
Brown (2007) has proven this finding.
According to the IRPC (2021), the trend has continued.
