A Quick IEEE Website Citation Guide

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) referencing style is a numeric citation style for citing sources in technical essays and research papers, typically in engineering and computer science.

It’s based on the Chicago Manual of Style but doesn’t use alphabetical order by author or source title for reference list entries. Instead, it uses numbers in square brackets to arrange the entries in the order the sources appear in the text. In-text citations also use bracketed numbers.

Here’s how to cite websites in the IEEE style.

IEEE website citation guidelines for reference lists

When using the IEEE style to cite websites in your reference list, use the following format:

[Number] Corporate Author or Author’s First Name Initial. Middle Initial(s), if any. Last Name. “Page Title.” Website Name. Abbreviated Month Day, Year published or last updated if available. URL (accessed: Abbreviated Month Day, Year).

Examples:

[1] J. Fuller. “Toolkits for Sustainable Manufacturing.” GlobalSpec. Oct. 6, 2020. https://insights.globalspec.com/article/15155/toolkits-for-sustainable-manufacturing (accessed: Feb. 7, 2022).

In-text citation rules for IEEE website references

The IEEE citation style uses numbered references in in-text citations instead of the author-date format. That means you need to place “[1]” right after your first paraphrased or quoted source, “[2]” after the second, and so on. It works for any type of sources, including websites.

Examples from the references above:

Sustainable engineering requires green toolkits and dedicated sustainability software. [1]

The construction industry’s future depends on expert project managers who can address global challenges with innovative infrastructure systems. [2]

Engineering includes various disciplines, including agricultural, biomedical, chemical, pharmaceutical, and civil engineering. [3]

Injection molding increases throughput and flexibility with complex shapes while reducing operational costs. [4]

Web developers, game developers, and software engineers use more than a dozen programming languages. [5]
