I am applying to the Master's Program in occupational therapy at the University of Southern of California. Getting my degree from this program will help me to expand my knowledge and give me the chance to help my patients. I have always had this dream of promoting health in the rehabilitation field and expanding my knowledge in my major, occupational therapy.
While looking back on my undergraduate experience, both academic and personal, I have been encouraged to discover myself more and more. I really enjoyed my internship experience at King Abdullah hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia because it encouraged and pushed me to go above and beyond what I had learned in the classroom. I fell in love with the idea of getting my master degree in occupational therapy after I gained 10 months of work experience at King Fahad hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This experience gave me responsibility to work in the field of rehabilitation, and it taught me how to deal with patients, as well as teaching me how to work on a team.
In addition to this experience, I have also worked for two months as an occupational therapist in a neuro outpatient clinic, assisting patients in organizing their daily activities. These tasks include assisting in self-care, home management, leisure, and social participation. furthermore, I have four months experience in pediatric care. During this time, I learned how to evaluate sensorimotor, cognitive, and adaptive skills, and facilitate progress toward developmental milestones. I Also learned how to develop and implement an intervention plan, based on the child’s needs and to participate in various child-appropriate occupations and environments (e.g., school, home, playground), including socializing with other children. Four months in acute neuro offered me extensive experience with assessing cognitive and perceptual deficits, and how to provide wheelchair assessment and management to promote endurance and mobility, depending on patient needs.
While I was working at the hospital, I discovered my passion to gain knowledge and experience in my major in order to provide the best intervention for my patients. It is my goal to be able to use my skills and knowledge that I will learn in my master's program to make this dream become a reality. My goal as an occupational therapist is to help people who are struggling to do their activities daily of living (ADLS) and who are trying to be independent with some impairments that affect their life. My purpose is to help them achieve the goal of being more independent in their lives. I wish to use my skills and my knowledge as an occupational therapist to help patients when they feel that all hope has been lost.
