Chasing after interview subjects, furiously typing away at a keyboard to meet deadline, and becoming allergic to sleep as I sit hunched with a red proofreading pen are scenes well known to the life of an editor. Despite two years of involvement as a writer, no awkward interview subject or public retaliation of a controversial article could prepare me for an editor’s responsibilities.
If one of my staff included misinformation in an article, the blame is on my shoulders. I am in charge of ensuring everyone is administered a substantive article topic, and am expected to guide them as they learn what it takes to inform a news hungry public.
As editor, I have to prove myself everyday. The position of leadership is unlike any other class or project I’ve ever been involved with; failing to meet deadline affects my staff and the entire school community more than it does myself.
Through this editorship, I have learned what it feels like to be relied on. Taking a walk through the hallway only to hear a child-faced freshman discussing the school budget cuts is the most wonderful reward I could ever receive.
