I can’t draw, I don’t paint, and I certainly can’t dance, but I can still create art. Video editing is a an art of supreme sensitivity and I have been developing my skills since I was 13 years old. Movies and videos have the power to make you laugh, gasp, or cry, just as the most affecting traditional art does. Additionally, I love the problem solving aspect. I faced one of my biggest problems while working on my favorite school project. I had a beautifully crafted five-minute video that unfortunately was five-minutes short of the required length. Adding five more minutes of filmed scenes was not an option; so I decided to write a texting conversation, then do a screen recording on my computer of the conversation using the iMessage app.
After over 20 hours of hard work, the video turned out to be a huge success. My APUSH teacher loved the creative use of film and texting to illustrate the similarities and differences of the flapper movement of the 20’s and the hippie movement of the 60s. For me, creativity is not a mere burst of brilliance; it is having an idea and bringing it to life. This does not happen in a single moment, but requires hours of planning and organizing, problem solving, and attention to detail. Creating videos has taught me how to take the ideas I visualize in my head and translate them into pieces that speak to others. In my own way I hope to work to address world problems such as poverty, human trafficking, and the education system by creating videos that spur people to action by making these problems visible.
