I was greatly excited yet disappointed to see my decisions letter on the admissions portal this month. Pleased to find out that that I still had a chance at attending Cornell University but also anxious about having to wait in anticipation for a few more months before the final decision. I would like to sincerely thank the Cornell Admissions Committee for taking the time to look through my application and offering me an opportunity to be deferred. Please accept this letter as an addendum to my application to provide updates to my senior year accomplishments. Navigating my previous Cornell supplemental application, I embraced the second chance to articulate my academic aspirations, personal growth, and genuine connection to Cornell University commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community, weaving a compelling narrative that reflects my potential contributions to the vibrant Cornell campus.
Since applying in November, I was involved in an art exhibition called the Lantern Project. The exhibition took place on November 25th and served as an initiative to commemorate the UN International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It showcased artwork which advocated for the elimination of gender-based violence from 12 students. I contributed a sculpture that I created in my AP Art class. Participating in the exhibition was truly an eye-opening experience and a great opportunity as I was able to use my art to bring awareness on a social issue that continues to pertain to society today. Learning to resolve social problems through urban development principles is one aspect that I hope to focus on in the future.
Throughout this semester I have been able to maintain my GPA. I was especially pleased for finishing the semester well in my AP Calculus BC class and AP Physics 2 class as they were my more challenging classes this semester. Getting A’s in these classes was an achievement, and I was glad that the effort paid off. Outside of class, I have been focusing on the Urban Gardening Club which is an environmental club that I lead. We are currently in the process of planning a garden which has been really exciting for the club! The club has chosen a location for the garden. Coming back from the holidays, we will be finishing up the proposal that outlines our plans for the space and how we will ensure the garden will be successful.
I have also spent some time learning more about architecture and interior design. After being accepted as a TEDxJIS speaker, I have been researching more about the impact of architecture on our emotions and human behavior which will be my topic for the event in February. I have also been catching up on one of my favorite YouTube channels “Mr. Kate” as I enjoy watching how the couple brings their audience around their room makeovers and their process of working with clients that have different tastes and preferences.
To continue my Cornell University supplemental essay, during the semester, I have been continuing to play tennis for the Varsity team. Recently, we were given a chance to play against five other schools in the International Association of Southeast Asia Schools (IASAS) where I was able to improve upon my doubles skills and explore working with members of my team for possible doubles partners. Being assigned to different partners for each game that I played helped me to become more adaptable to the various game situations. The team is currently gearing up for the IASAS tournament which will take place in Bangkok. I have been spending time at the gym and the tennis courts during my December break in preparation.
In addition to playing tennis, I have started a Harvard EdX Course titled “CitiesX: The Past, Present, and Future of Urban Life” to further expand my knowledge towards Urban Planning. I am excited for what the course has to offer as well as learning more about urban development principles through exploring and examining both developed and developing countries around the world. I have already been able to obtain a stronger understanding on how to improve urban areas through learning about the past, present, and future of these cities. This has continued to build upon my interest in visualizing what cities could become in the future.
Lastly, I have gone on photography trips around Jakarta with my friends and Mumbai while visiting family. I walked around the colonial areas in both cities (Kota Tua in Jakarta and Ballard Estate in Mumbai) as I am particularly interested in the way that colonial and urban planning policies can influence the form and function of these regions. It was fascinating to notice the similarities and differences in both third world cities as a result of years of European rule.
Cornell University has identified itself as a top institution for me, and I find myself constantly fascinated by its work in helping students to achieve their aspirations. If admitted, I would accept without hesitation and matriculate to the class of 2023 year.
