Greenwich College: Why I Choose This College to Study Food Science

“Food is medicine” – I firmly believe this statement. I often cook for my family. This means I know the importance of the nutritional value, convenience, safety and shelf life of foods which also means we have to be able to trust the people who produce the things that we eat. My dream is to play an essential role in organizations which are focused on implementing best practices to minimize food borne illnesses, sustainable food development, minimize food waste, and ensure that everyone in our community has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.  Why this college? In this essay I explain what program I choose and why. To achieve my academic goals I look forward to study at “Food Innovation Course” which offers a perfect amalgamation of insights from experts on product development, packaging, food safety, legislation, and sustainability.

Why this College/University? UK is one of the primary destinations to study in the whole world and your reputed institution will give me the overall exposure both practical and theoretical to excel in the field of my interest, being one of the best in the world, especially in food sciences. I know that a master’s program at such a prestigious institution such as yours will attract many well qualified applicants but I genuinely believe that I am an excellent candidate. I have an outstanding academic record. I hold a degree in a closely related discipline to the field I now wish to study and I already have significant and successful research experience.

Your institution has contributed immensely to internationally recognized research papers, has all the state-of-the-art infrastructure for carrying out high quality research and various labs with modern equipment. I would be honoured to be accepted to the Greenwich College, not only because of the stellar reputation of this institution but also because of the rich cultural and historical heritage of the city itself, which I would love to explore.  

In today’s modern era, especially in the context of developing countries like India, the country from where I come from, It was exhilarating to discover as an undergraduate that there remain so many opportunities to enhance current techniques and to discover innovations to improve the lot of the farmer, the processor, the distributor and, most importantly, that of the consumer. I am very glad that I made a decision that will enable me not only to ‘make a living’ but also to ‘make a difference’ in the world and I find this to be both a satisfying and humbling prospect. I do not need to travel far to see those who suffer acutely from science’s real but limited advances in Food Science to date in context of developing countries like India. The Food industry in UK & Europe is one the largest industry across the globe. The quality of Food safety standards enforced by Food Standards Agency (FSA) ensures consumers trust in food they eat.

When someone asks me now where I see myself in 20 years, I answer that I see myself managing innovational projects in food and food-related industries, investigating the market potential of new products and technologies and communicating these effectively to the general public and people with advanced technical knowledge. I believe that the socio-economical skills your academic program offers would be a valuable addition to the technical competencies I have developed during my studies at Netherlands, that they would be very helpful to achieve my professional aspirations.

To conclude, the constant rise of food vloggers, cookery shows on television, food blogs especially during the COVID-19 pandemic attest, human beings are justifiably obsessed with food. No wonder, since eating, and by extension cooking, are amongst the very few activities that we all must engage in daily. This shared obsession has been the catalyst for my continuing study and work within related fields during my graduation, post-graduation and even within my work.
