Official time of death: 9:03 PM. Cause of death: Age.
Even if you live a healthy life and take plenty of vitamins, age will always be the final killer. However, recent studies have discovered a possible alternative to stretch life spans through an enzyme called telomerase. By altering the effects, it could seemingly be possible to immortalize cells by elongating the chromosomes. This could change mankind altogether.
However, the only stopping force is that the enzyme only affects certain cells, such as fetal tissues, adult germ cells, and tumor cells. When in other cells, the enzyme is invisible and doesn’t have much of an effect.
Growing up in a house complete with roughly 150 different species of reptiles my entire life, I’ve always had a passion for science. Discovering possible causes and solutions was constantly a new challenge on my agenda. My attention is devoted to two main topics: biology and psychology, creating my curiosity in the medical field. Therefore, learning possible ways to improve human life sparked my interest. Through intensive research I found out that age has plenty of environmental factors, like geography, living conditions, and health. For instance, the average male life expectancy in Japan is 83, while in the United States is only 78. However, life expectancy is most directly linked to genes, exemplified by Jeanne Calment. She was an intensive smoker and the upholder of the world record of the longest lifespan of 122 years due to her genes.
During my time at George Mason, I would like to perform extensive labs in biochemical sciences. I would join organizations the college has to offer such as the Biomedical Engineering Society and the Student Nurses Association in order to pursue my career interests. Linking scientific and medical studies through studies, such as stretching the average lifespan of man, would be obtainable by taking advantage of George Mason’s varying range of career opportunities.
From my inquiry, I hope to possibly increase the opportunity for survival by altering the formula of telomerase to affect all cells. Through hard work and dedication, it could be virtually possible to elongate survival. However, my personal goals are to dedicate my time and energy into an important matter that will better society as a whole. Even if the enzyme is not able to be mutated enough to elongate the chromosomes, I will have gained knowledge and experience from the biomedical field as a whole. With this new found knowledge, I will be able to proceed with my major in nursing and minor in biology.
It is important to find the relationship between the two to discover as a nurse the underlying causes of pain or discomfort, which could deal with a physical or chemical disruption. Biology explains these hidden causes that will be discovered as a nurse. Overall, my lab studies will enable me to pursue my career goals and gain knowledge of my specialization in the meantime.
