In the “journey to be oneself,” people discover many things about themselves—both good and bad. This kind of self-revelation makes many people afraid to venture on the journey. Throughout life, I have experienced many different events including joyous, once-in-a-lifetime experiences and also immense challenges. This is why the journey to be oneself seems to be the riskiest of all journeys; we don’t have any idea of what truly lies ahead, and we must continually question the decisions we are making, so that we always make the best decision at the time. As I embark on the adventure of discovering and becoming myself, I know there will be both ups and downs, but it is my future, my journey. I will make the most of everything and will reach all of my goals when I reach the end of the road.
Many risks lie ahead in my college career as I embark on the adventure of discovering and becoming myself. One main risk that lies ahead is staying determined and persistent in the face of pursuing a very challenging major. For many years, I have been determined to become a pediatrician. The first risk I must take toward achieving this goal is to pursue an undergraduate degree in biochemistry/pre-medicine. I have always loved math and sciences, so this major allows me to focus on my strongest subjects and put them to use. I love figuring out and understanding things, but in this adventure, I will not always be able to know or understand everything right away as I have in high school. My academic journey in college will go much further beyond the surface of understanding and logic. It will take not only intelligence but also patience and time to slowly grow and learn from the risks I will be taking.
Because I will be pursuing a very challenging major, I face the risk of becoming overwhelmed by the workload. However, because I am determined to succeed, I can discover the best study methods and learn how to handle the different class loads I will have. I am already practicing effective study habits in the vigorous classes I am taking in high school. Although I have prepared for the work I expect to encounter in my college career, it is still a great risk because I do not know what the program will be like until I am actually there myself to experience the classes and workload. Until I have the chance to do this and figure out what will best help me complete my undergraduate degree, I will always need to be prepared for what is to come next.
Another risk that I must take is becoming independent; I will be leaving my home, family, and friends. In doing so, I know that I will grow apart from them, but I will also create a new bond with them that I do not have now. For this, I will need to take a new path in my journey, which will allow me to fully make my own decisions and learn to rely on myself. I know that I will miss many of the people and places I have here, but I am ready for something new and know that this will be a great change. Although I cannot predict what will exactly happen when I leave, I know it will be a risk for the best. In the end, this challenge of growing apart from my family is hard because I am very close to my parents, and I love watching my brother grow up; however, I will remain just as close but in a different way. I am a strong person and I want to take on this adventure as completely as possible! I know I must not take my family and friends for granted, and I will not, but instead of being with them every day, we must all trust that I will make great choices for myself in what will guide me into the future.
There will be many risks as I journey to find myself. I cannot begin to imagine them until they actually occur and I can experience them first hand. I cannot predict exactly what these risks may be, but I believe I am prepared. Whatever challenges come along during my journey, I look forward to meeting them with courage and determination so I can achieve my dreams.
