Why medicine? In Why I want to become a medical assistant essay this question I will answer as I often ask myself. Is it because I enjoy helping people? Why this apparent act of altruism? Negative state relief? Perhaps. Empathy? Perhaps. The feeling of ecstasy when faced with a problem I can’t solve? Perhaps. A little bit of everything. It is a composite of all those things and more that had built me up to make my passion into what it is today. I want to be a doctor, and within why you want to be a doctor essay I will explaine why I have not a single doubt about it.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

I did an internship at Vichayut hospital for a week, where I rotated through many departments, such as outpatient, radiology, and the operating room. There, it helped me understand the complexity of the interactions between doctors and patients. For example the emergency room specialist will have to interact with patients differently than the internist. The emergency room patients will mostly need immediate care, but for a short period. While internists will follow up and give a more holistic care. I then shadowed a GP for a work day. It gave me further insight into the medical world and that every patient is different. The communication and understanding that doctors must create for each patient is different than the next. The interesting part of general practice is the investigative part, when a patient goes into a room, although the doctor usually does not say much, the thought process and investigation for each patient is immense

I then wanted a different perspective in the field of medicine and wanted to see a public hospital, so I volunteered at a university hospital for two weeks. A department I went to was surgery department, where doctors and nurses worked up to 12 hour shifts, and were literally running. Where patients had to wait from 8 to 11 and were in terrible moods when they got to see their doctors. However, the doctors never frowned, never complained, never showed any signs of tiredness, and were always calm and collected, and did their best for every patient the entire time. Although being a doctor has negative aspects, it is a life that I want.

That experience also showed me the inner workings and harmonious collaboration within the healthcare team. The investigative roles of doctors, and the patient-interactive roles of nurses and nursing assistants. Patients often take other healthcare roles for granted, but other roles are just as essential as a doctor, everyone is a cog in a machine, where although each job’s role is different, the hospital needs everybody in order to run.

The human and investigative part of medicine is interesting, but I also find the sciences and anatomy also very fascinating. I watched multiple surgeries with Operation Smile, and a cesarean section at Vichaiyut hospital, where I got to see different parts of the human body that I got to learn about in biology class at school, and more. The surgeons and obstetricians were very passionate about their work, and I learned a lot of things that I could not have learnt at school.

At school, I am involved in a number of clubs and activities. I went on a trip with Operation Smile we helped comfort children with cleft lips or palettes and learned more about the intricacies of the disability from a medical as well as a personal lens. What I realized in this trip is that although the surgery itself is very important, preparing the patient pre-surgery, to make sure that they are comfortable and happy is also an important aspect. As well as making sure that the patients are happy post-surgery .

In Boy Scouts, UNICEF club, and ROTC, we did a number of service events, such as going to an orphanage to play games with kids, or organizing games and events for local children. Even though the activities were long and laborful, all of the experiences were more than rewarding, and helped me empathize with people from different backgrounds.

I also went camping with scouts in Nepal, where we worked with Habitat for Humanity to build houses for disaster victims. The victims to be were so very happy, and the experience was very fulfilling.

The community build club involves building items for teachers and school staff.. We had to investigate problems by interviewing teachers and school staff, and find creative solutions to the problem. I was also a part of the school’s JV rugby team which helped my collaboration skills immensely, my teammates and I need to know what each other are thinking to win a game. Being part or the varsity track and field team also helped with collaboration in a different way. I was a thrower (javelin, discus, shot put), and the main skill is to be able to give and take constructive criticism, and that to improvement minor details can have huge results.

I have been a member of House council for the past two and a half years. As a member of the council, I practiced leadership and planning skills. The council plans, organizes, and runs house events constantly throughout the school year. Addition to that, I also collect and calculate house points.

To end up I want to be a doctor essay, I can’t say that I will end up being an amazing doctor. However, I can say that I am striving to learn, and will be a worthy member of the medical school community. I can say that even though the life of a doctor can be backbreaking and demanding, and requires a lot of commitment, however, I will be able to adapt to the situation, and the gratifying nature of it only solidifies my passion for it.
