It is Friday night and I am wondering how Frida Kahlo was associated with Leon Trotsky. Naturally this leads me to Lenin, who led the October Revolution, which brings me to the Russian Empire, which is very overwhelming and full of details about Tsars and Greats. I find a point about Catherine the Great that leads me to wonder who or what a Cossack is, and this ultimately leads me to an article on Nikolai Gogol. I am in awe. My mind is fuzzy. Part of this is because it is the middle of the night, but it is also because I have connected two of my favorite artists through (several) clicks of a mouse. I'm excited and in shock for having drawn a line between two dots I never imagined connected.
I believe that at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, my obsessive love for internet searches will be cultivated into real research. With the help of brilliant professors and passionate classmates, I will learn to apply the information and force it out of its place in my browser history. Specifically, I hope to trace new lines in the Neuroscience program. My mind has found the mind itself to be incredibly interesting. I know that the University of Michigan has an excellent research-based Neuroscience Program, and this excites me because I will be able to delve into the most broad, captivating, and open topic there is. Because the study of the mind unites so many themes and ideas, I know that the LCA, with its vast and diverse programs, will be the perfect place to pursue this inquiry.
The LCA proves that there is a link between science and art, even though I often imagine them to be separate. There is physics involved in the sweet sound of Roy Buchanan's "Sweet Dreams." I want to learn what it is, and the University of Michigan gives the necessary freedom to explore. Because the campus atmosphere radiates with passion and curiosity, I know I will not be alone.
I would be able to connect with brilliant students who share my passion for subjects like the German Language in the Max Kade German Residence. I would also love to study abroad in Germany and be fully immersed in information and possibilities. I know my personal growth will be vast and rival my academic growth at the University of Michigan.
When the steps of Angell Hall are lightly covered with snow, I could walk into a class on anything from Feminist Political Theory to Perception. I bet, somehow, that these two classes connect. I might even get the chance to use the random tidbits from my internet searches, my own, early contribution to the intellectual life of the University of Michigan.
