Throughout my life, I embraced my Catholic calling to alleviate suffering, desiring to obtain a PhD in Immunology so I may work in laboratories on furthering Immunotherapy and its oncological applications. However, realizing these treatments come with moral dilemmas, I am applying to Boston University’s “Philosophy and Neuroscience” major for a holistic education in the humanities and sciences. I believe this is beneficial because the Philosophy curriculum will inform me of the Ethics necessary for practicing Neuroscience as I perform research, both during my undergraduate years and afterward.
However, it is not only this prospective degree which is enticing to me as a college-bound student, but also the possibilities to work directly with the university’s diverse faculty in numerous research projects spanning multiple disciplines. With positions ranging from an internship with an archaeology professor to biomedical research, Boston University’s strength is that it is committed to giving its students chances to gain experience in all the fields which interest them, not pigeonholing them into one. As a student who wishes to approach medicine from the scope of Immunology and Neuroscience, I believe the volume of on-campus research available is indicative of the academically-inclined environment the school establishes and upholds for its students: a setting I am looking for in colleges.
Thus, I wish to apply to Boston University because I believe the “Philosophy and Neuroscience” major will provide the moral backbone and the technical ability necessary to pursue the wealth of research opportunities available to students.
