Endless queues, low budget , and limited resources. These are the main thoughts which first struck me on my first training as a pharmacy intern in year one. Years pass by, and the situation does not get any better. With the flotation of the Egyptian pound and the continuous inflation of prices, less patients are gaining access to treatment. Inspired by the need for an efficient method to re-allocate healthcare resources, and my passion towards the newly emerging Pharmacoeconomics discipline. I am writing this essay in order to apply for your prestigious program to pursue a master's in the Pharmacoeconomics and Health outcome field in the U.S.A.
My dream of becoming a Pharmacoeconomist has all begun, when I attended a seminar conducted by a professor living in the U.K. The lecturer explained how developed countries assess the cost-effectiveness of their medications and how the government in the U.K. decide on whether a certain drug should be funded or not?. When the lecture came to an end, I thought to myself that this could represent the answer to our key problem here in Egypt. The authorities in my country have regularly failed to make the best use of the available health care resources. However as a pharmacist who took an oath to put people's lives first, I want to contribute to the development of health policy in my country in the best possible way. I want to play a greater role in optimizing people's health and well being. That being said, I realized that I need to obtain a master's degree which can equip me with the needed skills and knowledge to help me attain my future goals of conducting rigid research , and build capacity in my country. As a teaching assistant in the Faculty of Pharmacy in Cairo University, I believe I can play a huge role in educating my future students about the discipline. Upon my return, I would like to initiate research projects in collaboration with international organizations such as : WHO as well as the United Nations to help better shape the health policy in Egypt.
Searching for the best programs worldwide, I found that the U.S. will be the best place for me to pursue my master's. Firstly, U.S universities have a strong reputation regarding the quality of education and curricula offered to their students. Secondly, the U.S. is a home for many international students; creating a multi-cultural environment. This diversity will most certainly help me in networking with people all over the globe. It is this mix of culture, races, and religions that one aspires to be part of . Thirdly and most importantly, The U.S is the only place which offers Pharmacoeconomics courses within a Pharmacy graduate program, meaning that the program is tailored to benefit those , like me ; with pharmacy background and less economic knowledge. Finally, what makes the U.S a very attractive educational destination; is the top notch research carried out in most of its universities. It is my hope that one day , I would be able to conduct similarly unique, high quality research in Egypt in which I can use computer simulation modeling to aid decision makers in this country.
In conclusion, studying Pharmacoeconomics in the United States will provide me with a great insight that can help promote the contribution of Pharmacists in enhancing health care settings. It is my conviction that the Fulbright program will help me ensure the future development of my prospective students and be able to craft Egypt's health policy research.
