I am Okas Shakya I have completed my studies in college and now I am planning to get a higher education at Boston University. The Trustee scholarship is my only key to study at BU at the Biogeoscience program. I am writing this letter to apply for this golden opportunity for a BU Trustee scholarship for this program.
I regard myself lucky to have been awarded the chance to further my academic development in this prestigious university. I come from a small country in South-east Asia, Nepal located in between two big nations, China and India. Even from Nepal, I belong to one of the small indigenous communities of Newar. We are a very small community in comparison to the global landscape, and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to find an exposure to such a developed country, Germany and its education system, that is thousand of paces ahead from what I am used to. My only goal here is to utilize this incredible opportunity to develop myself and widen my perspectives that was previously only limited to the smaller view permitted in my country. I want to be an able and skilled technician and entrepreneur in the field of agriculture. Agriculture as a science and profession is something that my country has always depended upon but in current times agriculture has become lack luster with problems of insufficient inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides as well as the absence of well-informed and skilled agriculture technicians.
As you may know, Nepal is still a developing country and is still rife with political and economical problems. There has always been a problem with finance in my family due to the conditions of our country, and also as I mentioned before my family comes from a small indigenous community and opportunities for stable financial situations are hard to come by. I have always had to juggle my work and my education to maintain my daily life as well as my grades. I worked as an unofficial adviser in NamoBuddha Agroforestation where after finishing my studies I was appointed as a Manager. Apart from that I also contributed in educating younger generation in agriculture as a part time instructor in my free time at All-Nepal technical College, Kathmandu. This helped me decrease the financial burden on my parents who despite financial problems always looming around always supported me through thick and thin. I can say this with certainty, without their contribution I could not have overcome and pursued my dream of becoming a better crop protection expert.
My main goal is to develop new and improved ideas by introducing myself to new ideologies, sciences and technological marvels in the field of agriculture present here through my university and develop ways I can implement it back home. Currently, I am facing the problem of financial strain for which I had to search for a mini job. Although it does not pay much, it is physically demanding and it has put pressure on me to balance my education, my finances and my health. Even in these circumstances, I have not let this deter me from my goals.
Although, leaving Nepal and coming to Boston will be stressful. Accommodation, living expenses and having to balance my education with my work will make it a challenging time, however I am devoted to making sure that this will be a flourishing period for me.
This Bu Trustee scholarship is the chance for me that will help me to fully concentrate on my intention of attaining the best I can from the Biogeoscience program. This scholarship will ease my financial burdens which I know will decrease some of my mental burdens which would help me in my academic endeavors. Through this program I will strive to be an example and an envoy of Boston University throughout my future career and I am very grateful to have been selected to join this course. In the end, I would like to express my gratitude to you for taking the time to evaluate this application for scholarship.
