My Interest in Participating in the First Aid Nursing Course

I am applying for this specific course because of my interest in the career of nursing and being able to provide the public with a better health service. Since a young age I’ve always had the passion to be able to help someone in their time of need, I have always wanted to be the reason for better change and difference within society and I feel that studying Nursing would be the perfect opportunity for this. This personal statement consists of several parts: my academic backround, future plans and purposes to take part in this course. 

Although my initial career plan was not within the medical field, overtime I began to develop a deep interest in Nursing, for example when applying to college I was strongly considering a law focused career and wanted to go into policing to serve the public and do my part within society. During college I had chosen to study criminology and law as part of my A level subjects. However as time went on I realised I was no longer enjoying the courses, I had also begun speaking to my cousin who had recently graduated in nursing and midwifery, this further developed my knowledge and interest in studying Nursing in university as I got to understand the responsibilities that the job role would involve. I realised that I could use my passion of providing a service to the public by becoming a qualified nurse. Speaking to my cousin also inspired me to research more about the career of nurse and what it would include so I could prepare myself for the job role and the educational route I would need to take to get there.

I aspire to use my eventual degree in this course to be able to provide a caring service to those needed, watching and hearing about the NHS during this pandemic has greatly impacted my decision to study Adult Nursing, for example after some in depth research I found that nurses and and other key workers are playing large part in trying to overcome the virus, and although the stress and work load is likely to be high I know that my skills to work well under pressure will allow me to complete my role as a nurse to my full potential.

I would like to do my part in helping the public in difficult times like this and use my skills adapted from my education and personal life to do this. To continue this essay I will write about myself and personal experience. For getting more knowledge in nursing during my time at college I enrolled onto a extra curricular First Aid course, This helped me to understand and gain experience in some of the basic things a nursing role would include, for example I am now able to confidently examine casualties, perform CPR, treat burns and also aid individuals when there could be a choking emergency. The course helped me to understand the job role better and also provided me with the skills which I may have to use during my day to day life and also during my job role as a nurse.

Taking part in the first aid course not only taught me new skills but also allowed me to work on and improved my teamwork and communication skills, it allowed me to engage with my peers and discuss issues which we could work to find a solution for, it also helped me to be more confident in talking to new people and communicating clearly.

In addition to this I have been helping care for my father at home who is undergoing treatment for brain tumour and high blood pressure, I ensure he is taking all his required medication at the right time whilst ensuring I monitor his blood pressure twice a day, everyday, this has allowed me to gain understanding and experience on how I may be working with patients around the hospital.

I completed work experience at my local pharmacy which allowed me to deal with different medications and understand the importance of ensuring individuals are given the correct type and dose of certain drugs, although this is not directly linked to nursing, it allowed me to gain experience in another medical field where I may also be dealing with certain medication and the required doses which need giving to patients.
