As a student captivated by economics, I pursue the prospect of being able to truly understand the shear complexity of the economy. Through studying economics further at university, I hope to one day be emboldened and knowledgeable enough to uplift the economy by aiding in tackling prevalent issues like the drastic income inequality across the world. A career in economics is one that can support individuals, society, corporations, or even nations.
Throughout my studies of economics I have gained an increasing sense of determination. Economics is a fundamental pillar of society that can benefit or hinder. Economic growth can see an increase in negative externalities like pollution or recession can reduce the standard of living, so it is a very complex study with many considerations. Supply side policy is a macroeconomic concept that urges sustainable growth from the government. There a far more fiscal and monetary policies that nations must manage representing the depth and predominance of economics in a successful country. By the means of synthesing aspirin, I realised the relationship between chemical and economic ideas where chemistry has an underlying theme of sustainability and efficiency. Both work to solve issues of resource scarcity one from a physical lens and the other from a societal view and by combining the two principles we can form more unanimous decisions. Moreover, my study of maths compliments economics greatly. Whether it be using calculus to determine the rates of change from a model, or statistical tests to proxy likelihood, maths is relevant in both a practical and theoretical manner. Through further exploration, I came across Game Theory (a framework to analyse strategic interactions between rational decision makers) which is used to predict behavioural patterns of consumers. The synergistic relationship between my subjects has contributed to my economic abilities by allowing me to view problems from multiple perspectives.
Reflecting on this, my time at KBM Training and Recruitment highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary teams. During staff meeting session I observed how people of different skills i.e finance, management, worked together to critically analyse situations inside out. Personally, I conducted admin work where I was required to meet tight schedules, which helped me learn to optimise my time. Further to this, I attended the Publicis Sapient with the objective of developing a product which would flourish in the current market. As the leader of the project, i was responsible for delegating tasks; taking to consideration strengths and weaknesses of students. All in all which successfully developed our product in time and devised a well rounded presentation which garnered us 1st place.
To keep up with economic affairs, I read “The Economist' which articulated the US-China trade war. In anticipation of selling less goods, China would weaken their currency. This would lead to less demand for German goods weakening their economy. I therefore deduced, how economies were interlinked where a change in policy somewhere can have repercussions elsewhere. As a member of the economics, politics and finance society I bring these concepts to discussions sharing my ideas and hearing the opinions of others. I also liaise with guest speakers, introducing them to the society to share their experience and knowledge. Beyond my academia, I play for a football team - improving my coordination and team working skills in a pressured environment but also serving as a mechanism to relieve stress whenever necessary.
Overall, studying such a fulfilling course at university that is incredibly stimulating will motivate me to pursue a career in economics where I can make a difference. From keeping up with economic affairs, to taking and active role in economics, I believe I will be a great candidate for your university. The variety the ever changing world of economics brings is something that excites me.
