'Medical science has proven time and again that when the resources are provided, great progress in the treatment, cure, and prevention of disease can occur.' ~ by Michael J. Fox
Recent 'World Health Organization' statistics shows a 9.6 million cancer deaths in 2018 and it is raised to 18.1 million new cases of cancer. This event is simply one more aspect that convinces me that my choice of a career in Laboratory Medicine was the right one, and inspires me to study further at Master's level in this field to help prevent this serious problem. And this event is when the above proverb struck my mind and heart.
During my school days, I always use to get excited about learning Science, especially biology as it created a curiosity in me and left me wanting more about the subject. I have been quite fascinated by how the human body functions? This eagerness began, when I was on the verge of completing my school and I found out that my father was diagnosed with cancer which led me to constantly research and investigate the cause and how it can be cured? However, I watched my father's health deteriorating due to cancer so the desire to learn about the disease grown deeper with it. While the situations made me accept my responsibilities as a growing child and somehow I managed to complete my intermediate studies with the core subjects of my interest i.e. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. My thirst to extend knowledge and enthusiasm to solve the problems made me realize that a career in medicine i.e. Medical Scientist is one of the best ways to achieve my vision. But, my father was against it and wanted me to pursue a B.Com degree because he was the sole earner in our family who was fighting cancer while managing all the expenses. Situations made me obey his decision and I continued with my B.Com studies, but the cravings to expand my knowledge in Medical Science never ceased, and so I kept on reading various medical books. During this period I also lost my father and soon my elder sister took our responsibilities successfully. By then, I sincerely completed my graduation in B.Com. Looking at my dedication to Medical Science, my mother and sister supported me to live my dreams once again. The only thing I knew at that time was if life is giving me a second chance, it will be an opportunity to prove myself in the best way. Though I never regretted studying B.Com because I got to learn various aspects of business i.e. managing, organizing, costing, etc., which has provided me an additional skill which can be definitely applied anywhere in the future, and as the saying goes 'No knowledge is ever to be wasted or ever to be despised.' ~ By Joseph Needham
Medical science has intrigued me for many years. Finally, I embarked on my most awaited journey to pursue B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized 'ITM University' and completed with a decent score. I took this bold step because I wanted to live my life without any regrets and we are never too old to chase our dreams. During this course, I was appointed as a class leader by my teachers and batchmates due to my humble and responsible attitude. I organized and managed many events and activities as well as participated in quiz competition and debate competition. I also lead a team for poster presentation on the topic of 'Waste management' and also attended 'Continuing Medical Education (CME)' where the lectures were delivered by specialized doctors that was held at 'Tata Memorial Hospital'. I also made a project on Leukemia (Blood Cancer) during the last semester. The principles of ethics and integrity, a strong sense of purpose, and morality, which makes me a man of value. In all stages of my college life has presented me with the opportunity to interact with different kinds of people, develop leadership and communication skills. My involvement in seminars, debates, and sports has made me more than just an academic person.
My bachelor's, academics involved a mandatory of 1-month internship experience each semester. My internship experience at various renowned Hospitals and Pathology Labs shaped me in getting broader knowledge and practice at various departments such as Hematology, Histopathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, and Serology. While studying, my mind filled with lots of questions like, what kicks the growth of cancer? Why diabetes can only be controlled and not 100% cured? Why the traditional approach is much better than modern science in treating cancer patients? And many more. Coming across to such questions, I craved for a more systemic and detailed approach to study the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of various diseases and envisioned a goal to cure patients. I want people to lead healthier and happier lives, by focusing on curbing all the tendencies that can abrupt the system of the human body. While working on the project of Leukemia, cancer and blood took special interest of mine, going deeper into this research, I wanted to explore the knowledge of what initiates the growth of cancer cells, and what other diseases are caused due to unwanted changes in the tissue, and types of disease that are caused due to abnormal blood cells. So I decided to choose a specialization in Histology and Hematology in my Master's program.
My ambition is that after receiving education at your university, I see myself spending my career on researching and working towards a cancer-free society with the help of modern science. I would like to develop prevention programs and to address the effective treatments for eliminating incurable diseases, because 'Prevention is better than Cure'.
I decided to apply at RMIT University for several reasons. I find that your University offers me the best electives which has everything I am looking for in a program that correlates with my goals of education development. The courses which caught my attention in this program were 'Advanced Haematology and Advanced Anatomical Pathology'. The reason I am attracted to this University is by the strong emphasis on research and method will allow me to gain in-depth, hands-on experiences that will help me to get a head start in my career and the opportunity to have an international exposure.
