I am attracted to the subject of law as I believe that it will provide me with an interesting, intellectually challenging career. It is the diversity provided by the different types of law in areas such as, family, criminal or corporate law that I find most appealing. A career in criminal law, helping the innocent to retain their freedom or ensuring that the guilty are brought to account, is something that resonates strongly with my personal ethics. Alternatively, a career in corporate law would allow me expand my business acumen, something that I have developed from living in a particularly commercially orientated household. Ultimately, I would use my time studying law at university to refine my interests and decide which field I should dedicate my future career to.
My interest in law has led me to complete an extended project qualification, my investigation is titled 'Is cosmetic surgery successfully regulated in the UK?'. I have decided to base my project on law as it is a perfect opportunity to widen my knowledge. Additional study is involved in this as I am required to complete a 'Future Learn' course before beginning my project. I have also completed a weeks work placement at Square One Law firm. During the week, I gathered essential experience working alongside qualified lawyers in a professional environment. My time at Square One consisted of exploring family, corporate and commercial law. Perhaps the most useful part was first hand compiling a letter of advice for a real life case and experiencing the day to day activities of a lawyer. Overall, it left me with a rounded experience of a range of different areas of law and since then my admiration for the career has heightened.
Studying English Language at A-Level will help when studying law in terms of reading case law and creating long judgements. Geography involves an independent investigation project which has aided the development of my independent research skills. Economics has strengthened my numerical skills, an area that I may have lacked had I only studied a Humanity and English subjects. Overall, studying these subjects has enhanced my ability to write, reason and develop arguments as they are strong in logic, analysis and problem-solving. Upon researching the law degree, this replicates the type of work involved and I feel that I have the interest and skills to be a successful student of law.
At school I have contributed by assisting lower school students with their work. A particular focus was placed upon developing their reading skills which improved my interpersonal skills as I was required to interact with young people. Post GCSE's I volunteered at the primary school for a week. This involved working alongside the members of staff and children of different ages and this allowed me to gain communication skills and experience in a professional environment that was extremely varied.
Part-time I am employed as a catering assistant. I am a 'team leader’, a role responsible for the junior members of staff as well as monitoring the working area. This has enabled me to build a strong relationship with colleagues in order to deliver the best results in terms of meeting selling targets and providing optimum customer service. Similarly, I have increased confidence and the ability to work well under pressure, important skills which can be replicated within university life.
My main interest beyond academic study is dance, I have completed an intense six year training course in ballet and contemporary dance. It is designed to train you for a career in professional dance, therefore not only did this course benefit my creative side but it was conducted in a professional environment with high expectations. Fulfilling such expectations whilst attending school taught me to balance the requirements of study with extra-curricular activities. I believe my engagement in non-academic activities will allow me to play a full part in the wider aspects of university life.
