My Interest To Pursue A PhD Chemistry Program At Alberta University

I have research interest in Analytical, Medicinal and Material Chemistry particularly nanofabrication of photonic materials suitable for advanced industrial applications. I am particularly enthralled by the interdisciplinary nature and scientific content of the research work in the faculty of science, department of Chemistry, University of Alberta which offers high standard programs that examine, clarify science related issues that address our everyday living. Hence, I strongly believe that the intensive research and academic training a PhD in Alberta University will impart relevant scientific and analytical skills that would burgeon my research potentials.

As a research-enthusiasts, during my undergraduate study, I graduated top of my bachelors’ degree class in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Benin, Nigeria. My research project was on Medicinal and food Chemistry, powdered unripe plantain (Musa sapientum) was used as a possible enrichment for yoghurt preparation, and the ideal was to synthesis a yoghurt product that will provide both satisfaction and medicinal purpose to gastric intestinal ulcer patients. It was discovered that flavonoid leucocyanidin which is the active compound in the unripe plantain have some antiulcer properties which is responsible for protecting the mucosa membrane in the stomach wall by stimulating cell reproduction, promoting mucus secretion, enhancing mucus resistance, preventing the secretion of hydrochloric acid and ultimately curing the ulcer in combination with the fermented milk (yoghurt) provides a better satisfying value for the patients.

I am a Research Assistant in the department of Chemistry, University of Benin, Nigeria and an active member of the Functional Materials Research Group in the Department of Chemistry University of Benin. Results from my research have been published in peer–reviewed Elsevier journals. My master degree program had a focus on polymer Chemistry, synthesis, bio-materials functionalization, complex oil-modified Polyester using polymerization principles suitable for surface coating and anti-corrosion application.

I am also in the process of acquiring teaching skill since I work part-time as a Chemistry Teacher to Science Laboratory Technology students, faculty of science, University of Benin and supervise undergraduate students research Project. The time spent with students and share in their achievement and growth always gives my joy. These activities have imparted effective communication, leadership, teamwork, creative, innovative, result-oriented and analytical skills which will facilitate effective study if I am admitted to a PhD Chemistry program in your University.

By pursuing graduate study program in your University, I wish to move towards my goal of contributing to world scientific research and development of younger generation of scientist. On careful study of the University website I discover that your graduate program suits my needs perfectly and the research activities in your department of Chemistry is in accordance with my research interest. Together with its eminent faculty Professors who are leading the world in science and new innovations, excellent research facilities with state-of-the-art equipment which is not available in my home University, pleasant university atmosphere and balanced academic program, I believe that the tremendous scope for research in the field of chemistry will provide me with an energizing and challenging academic environment

Finally, I think I possess the requisite intellectual ability and motivation needed to study in your renowned institution, and I am ready to embark on this arduous, yet edifying path in my academic pursuit and quest for knowledge.
