“I knew that if I failed I wouldn't regret that, but I knew one thing I might regret is not trying” - Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder and CEO)
Quoting Jeff Bezos words made me realise that there is no tomorrow if you don’t live in present. Thinking about failure should not be an obstacle for starting a journey. One should be capable of taking risks and optimize every opportunity. There is no better way than to learn about seeking opportunities and using them in a most optimistic way. In today’s world, where most of the countries are well developed, there are still a few countries which are bounded by social myths and restrictions. To break such myths and bring reality into people's lives, would be a better scenario where they themselves are able to see such conditions and experience those social customs, which hinders the growth of the country. Human beings have an incredible ability to watch and remember incidents better, compared to listening and reading about the same issue. Making films is the best option to have an impact on the audience and help them have a better understanding of the issues. I want to share in this Northwestern University supplemental essay why I chose Northwestern to pursue my academic goals in filmmaking, also I will share what experience I already had while studying Film and Mass Media Research.
I did my graduation in Mass Media specialising in Journalism. Journalism, as a subject, broadened my mindset and made me realise, how better it is to try and start striving hard for a better future rather than regretting not taking up an opportunity when available. My interest towards filmmaking developed during under graduation when I chose Mass Media as my stream and gradually the interest grew while studying Sociology, Contemporary Issues, Mass Media Research, Cultural Studies, Public Opinion and Issues in Global Media.
I have always been a competent student both in academics and extra-curricular activities at school. I was inclined towards basketball and have been able to represent my team proudly at district and state tournaments. I am also practising Indian Classical Dance -Bharatnatyam for last six years. Representing my college in various cultural events during Intra college and Intercollege festivals help me improve and master my passion. I have worked on a research paper on Kashmir Issue: India and Pakistan for my projects in college. I also had an exposure to work on a documentary about Gender Neutral Laws, explaining the misuse of section 376 and 498A from the opposite gender's perspective.
Such exposures have helped me become a confident and an outspoken person. This taught me a whole set of skills that were beyond bookish knowledge. It helped me in interacting with people from different backgrounds which has been an eye-opener. Being engaged in these events and functions gave me a new experience and has taught me many new life lessons. I also figured out that I have a good ability to convince people. I am an ambitious and inquisitive person, always ready to learn and accept new things.
To conclude Northwestern University essay application, this university will not only provide me with the required international exposure but also a platform to experiment and create. With every educational milestone, I intend on setting benchmarks for myself and my peers. I am deeply interested in studying Film at Northwestern University. Its focus on independent filmmaking and technical proficiency with its location are exactly what I am looking for. I am sure, if given an opportunity, your university will help my potential meet my horizon.
