As a prospective student at NC State, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my experiences with diversity and discuss how I have contributed to creating an inclusive environment. I firmly believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords but essential values that shape individuals, communities, and institutions.
I was fortunate enough to be exposed to various cultures, languages, and traditions from an early age. This exposure made me appreciate and celebrate our differences while also recognizing our shared humanity. One particular experience stands out in my mind as a testament to the power of diversity.
In high school, I joined an extracurricular club called "Cultural Exchange." This club aimed to create a space for students from different ethnic backgrounds to share their cultures, traditions, and experiences with one another. Each month, a different culture was highlighted, and students would organize presentations, performances, and food tastings to educate their peers about their heritage.
During my sophomore year, it was my turn to represent my culture and country. I come from a Filipino background, and I was eager to showcase the rich history, vibrant traditions, and warm hospitality of the Philippines. With the help of my fellow club members, we transformed the school's auditorium into a mini Philippine village, complete with colorful decorations, traditional costumes, and an array of Filipino delicacies.
On the day of the event, the auditorium was filled with students, teachers, and parents excited to learn about the Philippines. As the program began, I spoke passionately about the cultural significance of various Filipino traditions, such as the Tinikling dance and the Bayanihan spirit. I could see the enthusiasm and interest in the eyes of those around me, which fueled my excitement even more.
After the presentations, it was time for the much-anticipated food tasting. Our club members had prepared traditional Filipino dishes, ranging from adobo to halo-halo. The aroma wafted through the auditorium, enticing everyone to try something new. The room was abuzz with conversations as people gathered around the food tables, sharing their thoughts and experiences. It was a beautiful sight to witness people from different backgrounds coming together over a shared love for food and curiosity about a different culture.
In that moment, it became clear to me that diversity is not just about acknowledging and appreciating our differences; it is about actively creating opportunities for interaction and understanding. By organizing the Cultural Exchange event, I had contributed to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals from various backgrounds could come together, share, and celebrate their unique identities.
At NC State, I plan to continue my journey of engaging with diverse perspectives and communities. I am eager to enroll in courses that explore the intersections of race, gender, class, and other social identities. These courses will provide me with the knowledge and tools to critically analyze and challenge systems of inequality and discrimination.
Furthermore, I am excited to join student organizations that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. Whether it is volunteering with the Multicultural Student Affairs or participating in the LGBTQ+ Alliance, I want to actively engage with these communities and contribute to their growth and empowerment. I firmly believe that it is not enough to be a passive observer of diversity; one must actively work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable environment.
In engaging with diverse perspectives and communities at NC State, I hope to learn and grow in ways that I cannot even imagine. I hope to challenge my own biases and assumptions, expand my worldview, and develop a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of the human experience. I want to learn from individuals who have different lived experiences, as their stories and journeys hold invaluable lessons.
Moreover, I hope to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become an advocate and ally for marginalized communities. I want to use my privilege and platform to amplify underrepresented voices, fight against injustice, and work towards a more equitable society. In doing so, I hope to contribute to the larger movement of dismantling systemic oppression and ensuring that every individual feels seen, heard, and valued.
My experiences with diversity have shaped me into an individual who values inclusivity, empathy, and understanding. Through my involvement in the Cultural Exchange club, I witnessed firsthand the power of bringing people together and celebrating our differences. At NC State, I plan to actively engage with diverse perspectives and communities, both inside and outside the classroom. I hope to learn, grow, and develop the skills necessary to become an agent of change. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future.
