Growing up in Southern California, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of water and power in our daily lives. From the droughts that left our lawns brown and our pools empty to the rolling blackouts that left us without electricity for hours on end, I have seen how vital these resources are to our community. It is this firsthand experience that has inspired me to pursue a degree in water and power, with the hope of making a difference in the lives of those around me.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

My interest in this field began during high school, when I took an environmental science class that focused on water conservation and alternative energy sources. I was struck by the staggering statistics that my teacher shared with us: that more than 2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water, and that water scarcity affects more than 40% of the world's population. I began to think about the ways in which I could contribute to the conservation and management of this precious resource.

As I delved deeper into the subject, I discovered that water and power are interconnected in ways that are often overlooked. For example, the energy sector is one of the largest consumers of water in the world, accounting for nearly 15% of global water withdrawals. This fact alone highlights the need for sustainable and efficient practices in both industries.

Moreover, I have always been interested in the nexus between technology and sustainability, and how the two can work in tandem to create more resilient systems. As a student of water and power, I hope to explore the latest innovations in renewable energy and water treatment, with an eye towards implementing these technologies in the communities that need them most.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have sought out opportunities to get involved in the field outside of the classroom. Last summer, I interned at a local water treatment plant, where I learned about the processes involved in purifying and distributing water to homes and businesses. This experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the challenges that water and power professionals face on a daily basis, and solidified my desire to contribute to this field in a meaningful way.
