Over the past year I have visited 11 schools, yet NYU is the one place that truly stood out to me, meeting all my needs, wants and then some. Early in my college search I learned that I prefered more intimate libral art schools opposed to larger universities. The collaboration between the faculty and students, community, and the flexible, interdisciplinary nature of curriculum are all vital to me; all things offered at NYU.
Growing up on Long Island, Manhattan has always been like a second home to me -more specifically, Greenwich Village, which just so happens to be where NYU is primarily located. Aside from the countless memories I have with friends that have taken place there, Washington Square Park serves as my outlet to escape the stresses that may present itself in my daily life. Sitting on the cement benches that encapsulate the Park’s fountain, I'm able to watch all different types of people and cultures come and go, flooding me with a sense of groundedness and curiosity. This “people watching” puts my life in the perspective of the rest of the world around me, helping me not only as an individual but as an actress. Going to a school in such a diverse city, would be extremely beneficial.
This tranquility is not limited to the 9. 75 acres that makes up Washington Square park, however, it carried with me when I entered the Tisch School of the Arts building last April. Getting off the elevator to attend an informational session, I was immediately immersed in such a radiant environment, that I felt I naturally fit in with. Watching students singing as they walked from one class to another, I was able to see a future version of myself; an independent, driven and jubilant student striving toward a future career in Musical Theater.
Leaving my visit, I was very impressed at the number of opportunities and connects that are presented to undergraduate students. Although I’m looking to major in musical theater, at NYU I am able to explore my interests in directing, playwright and costume design, while also being challenged academically. Artistically, something that really resonated with me was, the drama departments focus on how theater can be a vehicle for social change, a primary reason I’m looking to pursue a career in theater. That being said, NYU is an ideal place for exploring my passion for Musical Theater.
