As someone who has always been deeply interested in understanding the experiences and perspectives of people from diverse backgrounds, I have been drawn to the study of African and African American Studies. My motivation to pursue this field of study was sparked by a particularly eye-opening experience during my undergraduate years.

I had the opportunity to study abroad in Senegal, West Africa for a semester. During my time there, I was able to immerse myself in the local culture and develop a deeper appreciation for the history and struggles of the African people. I had the chance to speak with people who had lived through colonialism and its aftermath, as well as learn about the ongoing challenges of economic development, political stability, and social justice in the region.

While I was in Senegal, I also had the chance to take a course on African history and culture. The class was taught by an amazing professor who was passionate about the subject and truly invested in his students' learning. He challenged us to think critically about the ways in which the African continent and its people have been misrepresented and misunderstood throughout history, and to consider the ways in which we could work towards a more accurate and equitable portrayal of Africa in the future.

That experience was truly transformative for me. It opened my eyes to the incredible richness and diversity of African cultures, as well as the many challenges and injustices that African people continue to face. It also sparked a deep interest in exploring the ways in which African and African American Studies can be used to promote greater understanding, empathy, and social justice.

As I continued to pursue my undergraduate degree, I sought out opportunities to learn more about African and African American Studies. I took additional courses on the subject and participated in research projects and community service initiatives related to African and African American issues. I also volunteered as a tutor for children in underserved communities, many of whom were African American, and was struck by the profound impact that education and mentorship could have on their lives.

And I am eager to continue exploring the ways in which I can use my skills and knowledge to contribute to this important work.
