I always knew I wanted to do something exciting. Something that could require a lot from me, but also give me a lot of experience back. Being a nurse is that. Nursing is more than a profession, it is also a vocation in which there are daily opportunities to improve the lives of people when they are at their most vulnerable. When I was a student in the Secondary School, my Father had Deep Venous Thrombosis at that time, I felt the importance of Nursing and I decided to become a Nurse. At that moment I realized that a career in medicine was my true calling. Since then I was creating personal philosophy of nursing and now I feel prepared to apply to the West Virginia Medical College.
During my other undergraduate study, I volunteered at Baljurashi General Hospital in Medical Surgical Ward, this experience has helped me to develop a strong sense of self-discipline, as well as higher self-expectations. When I was a nurse student, I was very active with community activities. I volunteered in different awareness activities such as, World Diabetes Day and the Awareness about Breast Cancer Early Detection. I even got to meet patient themselves. The experience really excited me, and I found myself extremely interested in continuing my work as a Nurse.
Many patients I worked with were bedridden, therefore bedside care was imperative in ensuring patient morale remained high. I gained valuable experience needed by the practicing nurse in a clinical setting. I have experience in using handoff communication tools like SBAR. I also have developed skills like critical thinking, and time management. I realized that the organizational skills were vital. I had to priorities certain tasks and so being decisive was also fundamental. Moreover, it taught me that there is no 'typical day' for a nurse, emphasizing the necessity of situational flexibility. I also understood what crucial role does integrity has. Integrity plays a crucial role in nursing, as it serves as the foundation for establishing trust, maintaining professional standards, and delivering high-quality care to patients. In the nursing profession, integrity is demonstrated through ethical decision-making, honesty, accountability, and adherence to professional values.
After such experinece I was thinking more about the role of professional identity in nursing. It refers to the sense of belonging, values, beliefs, and commitments that define a nurse's professional role and shape their actions, attitudes, and interactions within the healthcare setting. It encompasses the unique characteristics and qualities that distinguish nurses as professionals and reflects their dedication to providing high-quality care. Professional identity in nursing is rooted in a set of core values such as compassion, integrity, empathy, and respect for the dignity and autonomy of patients. Nurses embody these values in their daily practice, ensuring that ethical principles guide their decision-making, interactions with patients, families, and the healthcare team, and the delivery of safe and effective care.
With time, I developed a need and desire to refocus my career goals to become an established medical surgical nurse practitioner with a command in this particular area of nursing and I feel that the West Virginia Medical College is the best place for this. For me nursing is as well as art and science. I believe that I can actualize my career goals and professional development. I realise that I need to increase the depth and scope of my knowledge, skills and experience in this field. This will enable me to provide patient care with integration of evidence-based practice and clinical experience in order to optimize patient care outcomes. To achieve my goal, I then will enroll for a master’s degree in Medical Surgical Nursing that would increase my knowledge and hands on skills in this specific field of nursing practice.
