As a lover of language and literature, I have always been drawn to the power of words to evoke emotion, inspire thought, and connect people across time and space. Poetry, in particular, has a unique ability to distill complex ideas and experiences into brief, memorable phrases that resonate deeply with readers. That's why I am passionate about pursuing a career as a poet and studying the craft at the University of Southern California.

My interest in poetry began in childhood when my parents would read nursery rhymes and lullabies to me before bed. As I grew older, I discovered poets like Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, and Sylvia Plath whose works sparked my imagination and inspired me to write my own verses. I spent countless hours filling notebooks with rhyming couplets, free verse, and haiku, experimenting with different styles and themes.

It wasn't until a family friend, who was a published poet, read some of my work and encouraged me to pursue it seriously, that I began to consider the possibility of becoming a poet. They invited me to attend a poetry reading where I saw firsthand the power of spoken word and the ability of poetry to move an audience. It was then that I realized that poetry was not just a hobby or a form of self-expression, but a means of communication that could connect people from all walks of life.

Since then, I have taken every opportunity to improve my writing skills, including attending writing workshops, participating in poetry slams, and reading the works of established poets. I have also worked with a mentor who has helped me develop my voice and style as a poet.

Studying poetry at the University of Southern California would provide me with the opportunity to learn from some of the most accomplished poets in the field, as well as to collaborate with other talented writers and performers. I am particularly interested in the university's emphasis on community engagement and outreach, which would allow me to use poetry as a means of promoting social justice and building bridges across cultural divides.

In addition to my passion for poetry, I am also excited about the prospect of studying other forms of literature and language at USC. The university's renowned English department offers a wide range of courses in everything from Shakespeare to contemporary fiction, as well as opportunities to study foreign languages and literatures. I believe that an interdisciplinary approach to literature will broaden my perspective and enrich my writing.

Overall, I am thrilled at the prospect of joining the vibrant and diverse community of scholars and artists at the University of Southern California, and I am confident that the knowledge and experiences I gain there will prepare me for a fulfilling career as a poet.
