Pharmacists play a significant role in our modern-day society and this can be seen through their impact on people's health. Studying pharmacy will allow me to apply my skills and knowledge in the medical field to contribute to the improvement of health. The prospect of working in scientific labs intrigues me and I look forward to understanding the method by which medicines are manufactured. I will be extremely thrilled to receive my acceptance letter for pharmacy admission, as it marks the beginning of my journey towards becoming a trusted and compassionate healthcare professional.
Being a Pharmacist requires one to be confident in their mathematical skills. Therefore, taking a core maths course in year 12 will help me in the future, especially when my mathematical abilities will need to be applied. As a Pharmacist, maths is used when taking accurate drug dosage calculations, as well as analysing, solving, producing, and illustrating results from investigative experiments in the lab. Studying Biomedical science independently has given me the opportunity to get an insight into scientific research which inspired me, as well as reassured me of my enthusiasm for pharmacy. What excites me the most about pharmacy is that I get to do further research as well as practical's into different components of the human body and its effects of diseases on it. Studying pharmacy will allow me to find a new approach to contemporary medicine to efficiently fight against diseases and discover new technologies to aid advancement in drug discovery.
Completing work experience in a care home allowed me to build a personal rapport with the residents and gave them a reason to put their trust in me. Working with the residents significantly developed my understanding of patient confidentiality and how important it was to maintain as a healthcare practitioner. Once a significant amount of rapport was built up, the residents could confide in me and tell me things with the understanding that those conversations would stay explicitly between us. The ability of healthcare practitioners to gain the trust of the public and uphold it made a great impression on me. The importance of routine was also demonstrated, as some duties were split between the care home workers. This included offering the residents food and drinks and presenting them with their medication at the right time. The different responsibilities of the healthcare team fascinated me alongside the manner in which they carried out their tasks with due diligence and care. My teamwork and leadership skills also improved as I had to work alongside others, in a multi-disciplinary team, to maintain and ensure patients are well cared for. I also gained the ability to prioritise heavy workloads and to work under pressure which will help me in the high-pressure environment of pharmacy. Going to work every single day also had a positive influence on me confirming my commitment and motivation to pursue pharmacy.
From a young age, I had always participated in sport, especially boxing and football which helped me find the best coping strategy when dealing with stressful periods. Boxing also improved my hand-eye coordination and dexterity which is a vital skill that a pharmacist needs. This also taught me a lot about working in teams, sharing ideas, leadership roles, and the importance of communication skills. In secondary school I had participated in a leadership program where I and my colleague would take care of a group of primary school kids for a whole day every week, we would talk to them about school life, social life and do many activities with them. These were a great advantage for me since I became a lot more confident and gaining numerous skills including mentoring and management skills.
I believe pharmacy is a profession that is immensely rewarding and highly respected. In conclusion to this application essay, I am keen to develop and utilise my skills to make a difference in people's lives and make a lasting impression on the pharmaceutical field. I intend to work hard and motivate myself in my studies in order to become a pharmacist.
