Chance, if you pull my hair one more time you're going to be in big trouble!" I threatened, trying to sound stern but ending up with a hint of laughter. Chance, the boy in front of me, sat in his wheelchair, grinning wide with a devilish look on his face. His mischievous antics were a part of our daily routine. "Chance, no one will want to be your friend if you hurt them," I gently scolded him. His face fell, and for the first time, I saw apology and understanding in his eyes.

I was a seasoned four-year-old at that time, a participant in the KUSD Peer Program. This unique initiative paired academically advanced preschoolers like me with academically, emotionally, and physically challenged children of the same age. In my mind, although my buddy Chance was in a wheelchair and thought yanking hair was funny, we were no different.

On the first day of school, I entered a world that was entirely new to me. It was a world filled with challenges, patience, and profound lessons. It took a few weeks, but Chance eventually stopped yanking on my locks. I grew with him that year, and we learned about each other's favorite colors, preferred coloring books, and cherished playtime activities. Most importantly, I discovered my passion for teaching and nurturing young minds. I realized that I loved watching people grow, and growing with them. I wanted to do that my whole life.

Reflecting on my year with Chance, I often wonder who benefited more from our companionship. It was a transformative experience that shaped my aspirations and goals. From that point on, I was certain that I wanted to be an educator, a mentor, and a guide for children like Chance. I wanted to make a positive impact on their lives, just as Chance had made on mine.

As I continued my educational journey, my commitment to becoming a teacher only grew stronger. I understood that teaching was not just about imparting knowledge; it was about fostering a nurturing environment where students could thrive and overcome challenges. I wanted to be a source of inspiration and support for those facing difficulties, just as I had been for Chance.

When I learned about the presidential scholarship, I saw it as an opportunity to further my dream of becoming an educator. The scholarship would not only provide me with the financial means to pursue higher education but also the platform to make a significant difference in the field of education. The thought of receiving the presidential scholarship was exhilarating, as it meant I could continue my journey towards my lifelong goal.

Receiving the presidential scholarship would not only be a personal achievement but also a commitment to serving my community and society at large. It would enable me to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to excel as an educator and advocate for inclusive and quality education. I am determined to utilize this scholarship to its fullest potential, not only for my benefit but also for the benefit of future generations.
