How modern youth can want to become a nurse? There is a plenty of different jobs that are easier to do and have higher salaries. Nevertheless this is one of the essays on why I want to be a nurse where I will answer the question. I have already learned so many things here at Duke University. I have learned many academic and spiritual lessons, and it is only my first semester. I think that the most important thing that I have learned about nursing is that it will help me fulfill my calling in life to help and to serve others. This class has taught me that nursing is not just a vocation, but it is also a way to minister, serve, and share God’s love with others.
The chapter that I enjoyed most from this class, was from chapter four in Professional Nursing Concepts. The chapter was on success in a nursing education program, and believe it was probably the most helpful chapter in the whole book. I liked this chapter because it walks you through effective study skills, using class time effectively, and how to prepare to take quizzes and exams. This chapter was helpful, because not only will these skills help me in school, but many of them (such as dedication, motivation, and problem solving) will help in areas outside of school, and in a future work environment.
The other chapter from Professional Nursing Concepts that I enjoyed was chapter 5 on healthcare policy and political action. I though this chapter was very interesting because it brought up a lot of points that I hadn’t thought about before. Some of these topics were why nurses should become more involved in the political system (and even why it was relevant to their job), laws regarding patient protection, and how laws can effect patient care and even patient outcomes.
So within this sample essay on why I want to be a nurse let me give the answer to this question. It’s a story I’ve told countless times since coming to Liberty. My grandparents were sick and they were in and out of hospitals when I was young. When I was 7, I knew that I wanted to do something related to the healthcare field, but I didn’t know enough about the field to know what specifically I wanted to do. My parents told me that being a doctor would be amazing. I’d get paid all this money to take care of people.
When I got a little older, however, I learned that to become a doctor, I would have to go through 4 years of college, followed by 4 years of medical school, followed by another 3-5 years of residency. Not only would it be a long time in school, but medical school runs around $32,000 per year.1 I realized that for me, this wouldn’t be practical. That was the moment that nursing first crossed my mind.
To sum up the essay on why I want to be a nurse, I thought about nursing a bit more, I prayed, and I talked to some close family friends that were nurses. It slowly began to dawn on me that maybe nursing was what God was calling me to do. I prayed about it a bit more, and then I applied to Duke University. I prayed about it a bit more, and I said, “God, if this is what you want me to do, show me the way.” My acceptance to Duke University was one of God’s signs that I was on the right path.
During my first semester here at Duke University, it hasn’t been easy, but I feel that God is showing me that I am supposed to be here in so many ways. A good grade on a test, a wonderful group of friends, and an amazing, caring church family. That is why I want to be a nurse. This is what I believe that God is calling me to do, and we cannot ignore His calling for us.
