Reasons Why I Want to Be a Social Worker

My desire to become a Social Worker along with my morals and beliefs has affirmed who I am called to be. “I have learned that Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” Booker T Washington. In this paper I will explaine why, my background and future goals for a career path. The topic of it is "Why I want to be a social worker" essay. My success today can be attributed to more than one person. Many people I know can pinpoint who they would thank for their success mostly immediate family or friends, I cannot. I grew up with a diversity of principals of consistency, dedication, challenge, faith, courage and hard work installed in me by a village of people. Growing up people would say to me “Your name is special” along with other things like “Ask Ms. know it all.” And when I got accepted into College my High School Advisor and every Adult in my life confirmed to me “You are headed in the right direction.” I took what people said and made them personal identifiers of who I am growing to become. Very young I knew I would be successful and not because of my own efforts but because I had “The Village”.

The Village that I know is not made up of Lawyers, Doctors, Musician, or Actors. They are not Scientist, Judges or City Councilmen, my village is made up of working class people. Growing up I witnessed people of my village dropping out of school, having children, doing drugs and oddly enough I wanted different for myself and for the people of my village. I wanted to do well in school, get a good job with intentions to improve the place I called my home. I still believe that becoming a Social Worker today will not only be a great opportunity to contribute but I could also affect the life experience for indidvsuals. Teachers, Neighbors, Co-workers and even some Organization leaders over time noticed a special potential and extended their hand to me. Many times I have had opportunities to show case my talents and passions and anything I did I wanted it to affect the life of someone else for the better. Throughout my entire life I have aimed for success because I always appreciated the value of knowledge. Attending Temple School of Social Work will not only help me further my knowledge, it will prepare me in a diverse setting that allows me to discover new things and address barriers that poor and oppressed populations suffer from. I understand today why my Village pushed me despite the barriers they faced, I know now they wanted to install an ethic in me that could not be challenged. They reminded me that I can do anything I set my mind to with hard work and dedication. I had remembered what everyone said and persevered. I want to be a Social Worker because I want to service others like others serviced me - that is needed to be mentioned in “Why I want to be a social worker” essay. 

I am from North Philadelphia, raised in foster care throughout a total of 4 different families. Coming from North Philadelphia my parents struggled with an unfortunate and horrifying drug addiction in which destroyed my family’s tradition and reputation. I was exposed to many injustices very young, social, economic and cultural. My family was stripped and forced to settle with their circumstances. Therefore, I believe it is my obligation and birth will to extend good favor to others who I can strongly relate too. Serving others gives me a sense of identity and I intend on assisting other throughout my entire career. I strive to have an effective impact on someone else life, like as many people had on mine. I want to demonstrate to others that you can create options when you are left with none, going against the odds and concurring true hopes. Becoming a Grad Student of my Cities Historically well known University will confirm that anything is possible from the people of my Village and will gratify everyone who has poured into me throughout the years, it is my duty to serve.

What was most compelling to me about Temples Mission is the focus on Public Service and evidence based practices. Public service requires an innovative mission and allows you to connect with others directly. I am a member of one of the largest public service organizations and I love to work hands on. To end up why do you want to be a social worker essay, I believe Temple University School of Public Heath overall will allow me to expand on my areas of expertise and offer me a great deal of practices that involve improving the overall quality of life. I understand that Temple University has a great scale of partnerships and resources that many universities do not offer and I want to work along with some of the greatest minds across the U.S Temple University School of Social Work Mission Statement aligns with my many goals and It is my view that life experiences shape us to whom we become and defines how we can contribute to others along our journey.
