When I was in grade school I wanted to be an engineer because my dad was an engineer. When I was in middle school I wanted to be a lawyer because my dad once tried to become a lawyer. I’m in high school– my dad is still an engineer– and I want to be a doctor. Go figure. I enjoy helping people and always have. Just up until now, I didn’t realize I should make a career of it.

Despite my admiration of my father, I have learned to be myself; I have no role model. My two brothers and my father (the only people I grew up with) have done better than give me someone to look up to: they have given me life-size examples on what not to do with my life. My father smokes, I don’t smoke. My older brother drinks, I don’t drink. My younger brother fails classes, I don’t fail.

The only advice my older brother has ever given me was to not end up like him and other non-relevant stuff about the opposite sex. The only advice my dad has ever given me was “don’t ever let one thing ruin your day”; now that I think about it, it wasn’t all that helpful in AP calculus. My uncle was the only one to give me useful advice: “You have to learn to take care of yourself, Ricky; no one else is going to help you,” he said and then he scolded my older brother about his new tattoos.

Knowing these ne’er-do-wells had its advantages. Before I was confused about what people wanted me to do with my life because no one ever pressured or expected much from me. I struck epiphany with my uncle’s advice. I actually have a choice. My dad doesn’t care what I end up doing as long as it makes me happy. My older brother just wants me to take care of him after I’m rich and my little brother is too busy playing video games to remember he has any siblings. With all this freedom, I’m never afraid of being criticized or embarrassed; therefore, I’m determined without distractions. I’m going to be a physician and no one is going to stop me, but I do hope there are people along the way to help.

I want to be a doctor to help people, to give back to the world, and hopefully, to make a difference in someone’s life. I know if someone saved my life, I would be forever grateful and appreciate life that much more. I simply want to give someone else a second chance. Also, I’m extremely interested in the field of medicine and biology. I’ve always been a science geek. In AP chemistry and AP biology, I’d hover two inches above my seat, on the tips of my toes, and grow ever more curious with every new fact I learned. You say the human body weight is sixty percent water? Brilliant. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe? Marvelous.

While a doctor, I hope to learn a lot of new things and help a lot of people. More importantly, however, I’m doing this for my future children. If anything, they’re the most inspiration I have to become a success. I’d like my son, Ricardo De Guzman IV, to stand strong and proud in front of his classmates and say “my father, he’s a doctor, and he’s my role model.”
