Small but Essential Outreach to the Community: College Admission Essay Sample

Every birthday of mine there is one specific thing I look forward to: my friend Tamara’s handmade card. Every year she makes me a homemade card and every year, I’m warmed by her thoughtfulness, love, and care. It’s the small yet thoughtful gestures like these that matter most to me.

The Acts of Random Kindness Club stands for exactly that; we work to serve our community through small, yet meaningful acts. Everyone wants to feel loved, so as a club, we strive to reach out to a large range of students to create a more inclusive campus. For our first activity this year, each member wrote two notes, tied each around a Twix candy bar, and gave them to two students they had never met before. Many students, eyes wide open and shocked, were touched by this heartfelt gesture. We also hold staff appreciation activities in which our members create thank you posters for our faculty. Through these little activities, we strive to add positivity to the environment and put smiles on peoples’ faces.

Personally, I want the club to have a lasting impact, one in which students will take their authentic motives and serve the community beyond our school. An example of how we can impact our local community is by visiting nursing homes. I know how much it means to the elderly when they see a happy youthful soul come in and greet them with a smile. The action may be minor for the club, but it could possibly make a huge difference in the nursing home environment that day. Thus, I’m currently working to have the club serve the community beyond our school for the first time. I am in the process of organizing an ARKtivity for the club members to make holiday goody bags and deliver them to a nursing home. My goal is for people to see how these little things can make a big impact and thus continue to embody this club in their everyday life.
