Study Plan for Master's Degree: Public Health Career Goals

Starting from my childhood when I was in an elementary school, I realized that I had more questions than answers about life and living things. A growing interest in understanding the origin, structure, development, growth, and function of living creatures led me to major in science particularly biology with a plan to become a medical doctor. I always asked myself what if people lived healthier lives, practiced preventive medicine, and took precautions against illness and diseases. As a result of that, I burnt the midnight oil to prove my mettle with successful results. I have received a lot of prizes since form my primary school for being an overall student in our class for more three times. In matriculation examination conducted by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), I scored the highest marks in our secondary school. This succeeded me to secure a seat in one of the best and most famous universities in Nigeria (Bayero University Kano). Even though I was not able to secure admission into medical school due to high competition and other reasons, rather I was admitted to study Human Anatomy. My days in the human anatomy department often made me think about the body structures in its normal and abnormal states. I already doubted my future career choice as an anatomist. 

Even though I loved the science of it and helping people, the lack of variety within the field and its limited options for growth bothered me. I want a career that helped a large number of people around me, to emphasized prevention of diseases and primary health care rather than tertiary care, and would continually challenge and motivate me to improve. Knowing that I did not want to pursue anatomy as I had originally studied in my bachelor's degree, my thoughts wandered to study public health for a Master’s degree at the Yale University. I had my undergraduate education at Bayero University, Kano where I consistently ranked among the tops best students of the class, provided me with the best possible undergraduate education in anatomy. I acquired a strong background in the fundamentals of basic medical science subjects like Gross Anatomy, histology, embryology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, Statistics, Computer science, and also learned how to perform data analysis using SPSS, G-Power and Microsoft Office (excel) to mention but few, thus stimulating my interest in advance research. 

After completing my bachelor's degree from Bayero University Kano with the Second Class Upper (2.1) division in 2017, I joined one Non-governmental organization called “Societal healthcare organization.” This organization aims to provide quality and effective health with social services to disadvantaged groups, especially women and children. As a member of this organization, I realized how important helping and supporting the community is because I interact with different people from different locations having different ideas. Recently, this organization is undergoing one big project called, “Breast cancer awareness.” This project concentrated on how women (married and non-married) can learn and understand the sign and symptoms of breast cancer. Currently, over 10,000 women have benefited this program from different parts of the state with a free mammography scan. This motivated me to study public health, particularly Global Health. 

To end up why public health essay, I want to pursue the Master of Public Health Program at the Yale University with a concentration in Global Health to research and implement intervention policies aimed at providing the population with direct access to healthcare services. Also, I inspire to infuse health care concepts in particular to women and children by evaluating and integrating health awareness in educational programs and conducting campaigns that would elevate a sense of responsibility for better well-being. The Master of Public Health program at the Yale University will be demanding, but I am willing to give it my very best, for I have the solid dedication, maturity, and desire to become a public health practitioner.
