The majority of people in my community had similar backgrounds, beliefs, and cultural experiences. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I had the opportunity to travel to New York City with my school's drama club. This trip completely shattered my preconceived notions and greatly impacted my worldview.
Walking through the streets of New York City, I was in awe of the diversity that surrounded me. People from all walks of life passed by, each with their own unique story to tell. I was exposed to a multitude of cultures, languages, and traditions that were completely foreign to me. It was a sensory overload, but I embraced every moment of it.
One particular experience stands out in my memory. We visited Chinatown, and it was like stepping into an entirely different world. The bustling streets were lined with shops selling exotic fruits, vibrant textiles, and traditional Chinese cuisine. The air was filled with the sound of Chinese music and the aroma of various spices. I couldn't help but be drawn in by the energy and vibrancy of the neighborhood.
As we wandered through the streets, I noticed a group of elderly Chinese women practicing tai chi in a nearby park. Intrigued, I approached them and with the help of a translator, I was able to communicate with one of the women. She shared with me the importance of tai chi in her culture and how it promotes balance and harmony in both the physical and spiritual aspects of life.
This encounter had a profound impact on me. It made me realize that there is so much more to the world than what I had previously known. It opened my eyes to the beauty and richness of different cultures and made me appreciate the importance of diversity in shaping our world.
Upon returning home, I was determined to bring this newfound perspective into my own community. I started by volunteering at a local cultural center, where I helped organize events that celebrated the diversity of our town. I also joined a community group that aimed to promote inclusivity and understanding among different cultural groups.
When I found out about the University of Michigan's commitment to diversity and inclusion, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. I am eager to contribute to creating an inclusive campus environment that celebrates diversity in all its forms.
One way I plan to contribute is by getting involved in student organizations that promote cultural awareness and understanding. Whether it's joining a club dedicated to a specific culture or participating in events that showcase different traditions, I believe that by actively engaging with and learning from individuals with diverse backgrounds, we can foster a more inclusive campus community.
Additionally, I plan to pursue a major in International Studies, which will allow me to further explore different cultures and perspectives. I hope to use this knowledge to bridge gaps and create dialogue among different communities on campus.
Furthermore, I recognize the importance of open and respectful communication when it comes to fostering an inclusive campus environment. I plan to actively listen to the experiences and perspectives of others, especially those from underrepresented communities, and amplify their voices. By understanding and acknowledging the unique challenges and experiences of others, I hope to create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
Lastly, I understand the power of education in promoting inclusivity. I plan to take advantage of the diverse academic opportunities at the University of Michigan to further expand my understanding of different cultures, histories, and perspectives. By continuously challenging my own assumptions and broadening my knowledge, I can contribute to creating a more welcoming and inclusive campus for all students.
In conclusion, my trip to New York City opened my eyes to the importance of diversity and inclusion. It taught me to appreciate different cultures and perspectives, and it inspired me to actively contribute to creating an inclusive campus environment at the University of Michigan. Through engagement with student organizations, pursuing an International Studies major, promoting open communication, and continuing my education, I hope to make a positive impact on the campus community and celebrate the diversity that makes the University of Michigan so special.
