My yearning for the highest caliber of learning has taken me to Design and Architecture Senior High; it has been the driving force that wakes me up in the morning to prepare for an eight hour day as well as two hours of travel time, it has defined my indifference by not allowing it to exist as many other students my age embrace it. Every student at DASH has gone through a rigorous selection process of auditions, waiting and interviews synonymous with what the college search and application process makes each freshman class endure. I have been taught and pushed to make work that is evocative, that is innovative and is influenced by the surroundings that has produced the unique “me”.
The myriad of examples that embody the Artes in my life can be seen in my career program work, as well as my fine art. At DASH students engage in a career program from sophomore to senior year, and have additional core art classes as well as focused academic courses of the norm. I dedicated my meticulousness to drafting in the Architecture program my sophomore year, and have allotted the rest of my time, my skills and diligence to Graphic Design. Learning programs professionals’ use, and working under austere deadlines, I have formed a graphic identity and familiarity with the art form that we see most in the world. My fine art has been propelled by questions of ideals and expectations placed upon certain roles in society.
More frequently I have been dedicating the majority of my time to the Vires and Mores, although I continue making art. I have had a shift in my perception of what making art means; I see art as a self-gratuitous form of expression, that is too solely based on me and my intuition on pre-existing situations, this unbalanced concept has made me feel obligated to give back to the community instead of analyzing it. My calendar has become swollen with events at the Ronald McDonald House of South Florida and the Hebrew Home of South Beach as well as other epicenters of places where love and community works uniquely. The Ronald McDonald House is a home for low-income families with disabled children. The reward from my time spent with the children of the RMH is ephemeral; which is why I revisit their “home-away-from-home” as often as possible. Interacting with these kids, who rarely smile, has taught me the quintessential meaning of community and family because love works differently here. Coming from a broken family, and being the first generation in the United States, I have grown up lacking the community that I am now becoming a part of.
These guiding elements of FSU (Vitres, Artes, and Mores) have always been a part of my life and academic career, as well as the source of my integrity and success and will continue to be factors of my character as a student at FSU.
