It has always been a dream of mine to travel to a Spanish speaking country, to immerse myself in the language and culture. Sadly, due to financial constraints, my family has never been able to travel out of the country, except for one trip to see relatives in Canada. Thus, starting my fifth year of advanced high school Spanish is the closest that I have gotten to experiencing these dreams. Yet now that I have this ticket, I know it will be difficult to choose which country to visit. I could go to Costa Rica and breathe in the fresh air that accompanies the breathtaking beauty found throughout the country. I could travel to Peru and climb to the heights Machu Picchu while learning about the Incas who skillfully crafted a city made with stones but no mortar. I could travel to Spain and walk through the halls of incredible buildings, such as the Alhambra, built over the hundreds of years that have led up to the culturally rich Spain that we know today.
However, I think I will travel to Antigua, a culturally rich city located in southern Guatemala. It’s known not only for its astounding colonial architecture but also for its language schools. That’s where I will go and what I will do: study Spanish language culture in Antigua, Guatemala.
Now, one might question why I, as a Caucasian red-haired American, have such a burning desire to use my one time magic ticket to learn and master the Spanish language. As a Texas resident, I have seen an influx of immigrants re-shape my home state, connecting Texas anew to the rest of the world. I’ve already seen how potent just five limited years of studying another language and culture have been. Whether it be translating for an injured athlete or showing a new student around the school, speaking Spanish has been a valuable tool, one that that will never become obsolete for me. This ticket will help me further my knowledge, so that I can continue to exercise my Spanish in a way that benefits others. For now, Antigua, here I come!
