As I face choices about my future and what career path I would like to take, I realize it would be liberating to use those skills I developed to cope with the world to actually make a difference in the world. In my 'why I choose education as my course' essay, I will discuss my career path and what I've done for it. This is not a 150-word essay about choosing a career but a 1000-word essay about what I am willing to do.
I am applying to study for a BA in Graphic Design so that I can broaden my knowledge in all areas of design in order to fully utilise my creative ability and give me the best chance of a career in this field. It is such a liberating feeling to me to know that I am capable of taking a concept from its initial stages and design a poster or a wallpaper or an album cover, for example, any of which might influence other peoples’ choices or how they view a product. Within why did you choose this university essay sample, I want to mention that I really love how design can be anything you want it to be and how my creative skills challenge me to think outside of the box. Design knows no limits and allows me to push myself, encouraging me to continually develop my imagination and creative style.
Dyslexia means that pictures are like words to me. Hence design is something that has allowed me to show my personality within my work without having to worry about applying words, grammar or applying the spell check. Design helps me to express myself in a way that is meaningful to me and I find it very satisfying to see a process through from start to finish. I am passionate about exploring and experimenting with a variety of different resources and materials.
I am currently studying Level 3 Graphic Design at Gloucestershire College. This course has provided me with a better understanding of the type of career I want to pursue in the future. I am interested in learning and understanding more about design, in particular, seeing a project develop from start to finish. I want to see or hold my final product. My example of courses that I am studying encourages me to work independently: I am given a brief and then I am expected to produce an outcome. This type of teaching will certainly help me transition to the independent learning that many universities expect of their students as I am used to working in that way. Most of my work is done through Adobe Cloud Software which I am very confident at using. Last year, my Christmas card design won 2nd place in a competition run by the county council and was chosen to be used by the Chairman of Gloucester Council as part of a live student brief.
In addition to my college course I have been volunteering at my local art gallery, Wilson Art, in Cheltenham. Here I have been exposed to a variety of different art from contemporary to traditional. My favourite exhibitor was Katy Welsh, who is a print designer and illustrator. I learnt from her that you do not have to use traditional methods to create art. She has opened my eyes to a different way of designing and this has inspired me to explore my own artistic styles. I also worked for local PR firm ‘You Do Better’ as a summer intern, helping with social media posts for clients and promoting their companies to the relevant markets. I have also worked for my local tennis club as their photographer at all events, which has resulted in many of my photographs being used on social media and in newspapers and newsletters.
The example of course of study that was mentioned before has helped me to gain more experience as a photographer. It has developed one of my main interests – photography, in particular capturing the human form. Everyone is different, no human is alike and every picture is unique. A picture can capture the real beauty and also the essence of human frailty, all in one shot. I would like to develop my photography style and incorporate it into my graphic design work, which I believe would be possible on this course.
I also love music and going to concerts. I have a varied musical taste, I listen to all types of music from classical to rap to indie. All types of music inspire me and appeal to my taste.
Ella Becket is one of my favourite graphic designers and illustrators. I like her unique style. She believes that we shouldn’t have a label and she creates binary art. I’m inspired by her boldness and creativity. She is a small independent artist who has made a name for herself by being individual and brave and this inspires me to follow my own path as well.
Overall, I believe I would bring individuality and uniqueness to the course. I am enthusiastic and willing to explore and experiment with different mediums to push my creative side into new pastures. To end up why you choose this university essay, I believe a BA in Graphic Design will inspire me to do so, particularly because this course will enable me to be exposed to different modules in art forms that I have never used but would like to learn. I always push myself to the best of my abilities and have a strong desire to succeed in design and learn as much as possible. I can be counted on as a team player but I am also happy to research independently. My friends describe me as kind, happy, fun and always supportive. I believe this course will be the right fit for me because it will not only foster my natural talent in design but also develop my skills to become an employable graphic designer.
